Question about High Fasting versus good days

Just came back from a discouraging visit with my doctor. A1c was 6.6 versus 6.4 about 3 months ago. Based on my daytime readings, I would have expected my A1c to be much lower. Many days, I am able to keep my highest peaks under 10, and seem to be having an average level of 5 - 6.

But my fasting BG is really unpredictable. One morning this week I woke with BG of 9.4, and another morning it was 5.4. The average seems to be about 7.5, and I'm wondering if high reading in the night/early morning are screwing up my A1c.

My GP (NOT my diabetic specialist) today said I may need to some type of slow acting insulin for bedtime use, while keeping on with my current regimen of Rapaglinide and Metformin which seem to be working well during the day.

Does anyone have personal experiences like this? Is anyone on a similar regimen, but taking insulin at night?
 
Have you tried a small protien snack before bed? Some people find this helps.
 
I have not tried that. What would a suitable low sugar/high protein snack be? Perhaps a teaspoon of peanut butter?
 
Bear in mind that your BG readings are in mmol and your hba1c is % they do not relate directly. There is a converter here:http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html
Also a reading of 6.6 is pretty good an not something to be discouraged by.

If your morning fasting levels are varying wildly as you imply it's going to be impossible to tell when to have a night-time snack. Is there any correlation between your bedtime readings and your morning ones? Any difference in your evening meal (in terms of fat or carb content) compared to your fasting levels. You should keep a diary and see if you can spot any trends.

I've just been adjusting my insulin to cover this problem by increasing my nigh-time insulin so as to reduce my morning one as my main meal is in the evening. Without insulin you have no way to adjust for changes in meal intake.
 
Thanks for those ideas, which I will implement.

I have not seen any corelation between my bedtime readings and my fasting readings, but that might not mean that there is no relationship between my supper meal and my fasting readings, I suppose. I generally go to sleep with BG readings between 5.5 and 6.5.

A diary of my evening meals and morning readings would be a good idea. I'll try that, starting immediately.
