just wondering if anyone out there is like me and doing fasting during the evening to try and control their BG levels? i started well before Xmas to see if i could get better control of my diabetes and although i have had the odd slip up due to an influence beyond my control my readings overall have come really down and night time readings are back in range. readings are on average just above 7 and best has been around 6. my only worry with fasting for long periods is getting hypos as one of my medications gliclazide is well known to cause it and i am on my own. the telling will be when i next have my blood test that like so many is getting over due.

i have also seen a few topics on here about steroid induce diabetes and beginning to wonder if that is the case with me as i have been on the stuff for 20 odd years.

I try to fast from around 6 or 7 in the evening till at least 11 the next day, but I do have a Nescafe with a dash of milk in it not long after getting up early so that might mess things up a bit. I'm not on any medications though so I've got it easy. My readings are coming down slowly.

All drugs have side effects so I wouldn't be at all surprised about the steroids. My Mum looked like a puffa fish the time she was on those, luckily it wasn't for l ong.

Mikey, it sounds like your numbers are responding well to your current regime. You mustt be pleased?

I have never taken Gliclazide, so I have no personal experience of dealing with it, but I would comment that at the moment your numbers seem a little away from hypo-territory (3.9 and below).

In your shoes, I'd just keep a close eye on things and if they're getting very close to 4.0, then I'd have a word with my Doc/Nurse to see if my medication could possibly be tweaked a bit?

I doubt anyone could reasonably tell you whether steroid caused your diabetes, and for now, it's most important tto manage it well, and keep having your regular reviews.

to say when i first came on here i couldn't even get below 12 and most days it would creep up to 20+ that was not healthy. i thought i would try it is an experiment and just then carried on. it is not easy to do something like this though every night.

the steroid dose is very low but it is the amount of years i have been on the stuff which makes me wonder about if it has had some bearing on inducing diabetes.

Jan we were talking about fasting and be blown someone was only coming to the property with a takeaway until they realised it was the wrong address then went away got any closer i would of dragged them in 🙂

i have had to come back to this topic. i had a nurse here this morning to carry out a procedure and afterwards i told her about the diabetic fasting i was doing and she was not happy about me doing it as i was putting myself at risk of hypo which would not be good as i am on my own.

any thoughts about this situation more than welcome.

For me, personally (and I will state, clearly I have never taken any medication to help me live with my diabetes), I don't consider what you do to be fasting. I just call it being finished eating for the day.

I have never snacked, so when we've had our evening meal, that's it for me until breakfast time.

My view (again, I stress as someone not using meds) is that if meds are causing hypos with any regularity, then it feels like a good idea to have a review of the medications in use, with a view to maybe tweaking doses.

I can never quite get my head around feeding to accommodate medications.

Obviously, treating a hypo is critical, so I'm not suggesting hypos should be ignored.

i presume it all boils down to what time people have their evening meal. i have an early meal well before 4pm and that means i am going some 18 hours with nothing inside which is why the nurse was concerned about going in to hypos.

would still be interested to hear more about steroid induced diabetes

I think this question should involve a few factors. First of all, do you feel good eating this way? Is it the instruction of your doctor to eat this way? I think it is hard to lose weight and build a body that way when you want to have muscles shaped and firm; I suggest you eat more proteins and only healthy fats. That way, you may also add some steroids, which gives an additional effect if you work out too. However, that way, you won't get too skinny, so you have to decide what aim you pursue. More about steroids action here https://buyroidscanada.co/
