Hi, (hoping someone can help with my query.

For the past week I had been getting a strange taste in my mouth, sometimes salty but mainly sweet, this seems to be localised to the top back upper section of my mouth.

Everything seems to taste sweet, even water.

I had also been peeing more (but this is kind of normal for me when I get health anxiety).

I called my local GP and was passed on to the practice Nurse, who advised I come in for a urine test.

Following the test the Nurse said that there was no presence of ketones / glucose or infection in the urine.

I explained to the Nurse that I had been peeing a lot during the morning and went for the test just after 14:00 (when I had eaten at 12:00.)

I asked the Nurse if my frequent urination would have affected the presence of ketones and she explained that it is not possible to dilate them as they are either present or not.

So essentially my question is if frequent urination would skew the results of the urine dip test (as if levels had not had a chance to build up?)

I have ordered a blood glucose monitor and will also request a HbA1c test from my GP.

Apologies for the ramble of text, just posting here for some advice.

Thanks very much for any help!

Every single ml of urine in the bladder, would have glucose and ketones present in it, so doesn't matter whether it's when you are bursting and wee a quart or 10 mins after that and only a dribble.

Thanks for your reply TW (I don't have the heart to type your full screen name..!)

I have a blood glucose monitor arriving tomorrow so will be able to check my levels and at least get some idea if things are high.

Thanks for your input 🙂

Is your meter a duo? If not you will really need some ketone urine strips to check for ketones which you can buy pretty cheaply off ebay or similar.

I would say it’s very unlikely @Rstanton

In diabetes the excess urination that can come pre-diagnosis is an attempt to flush out the excess glucose through the kidneys. So if your increased urination were related to high glucose levels, there would definitely have been glucose in it I would have thought.

Hope this reduces your health anxiety around the possibility of diabetes.
