Can I please pick your brains again.
Reading before lunch 5.7
6 crackers and cheese plus Actimel probiotic
2 hrs later. 9.8. Aargh
1 hr after that. 4.2

Cheese and biscuits don’t normally give me a rise like that. Could it be the probiotic, suggested by dietician? I have thrown the packet away so don’t have access to carbs etc, and then of course the huge drop one hour later. Now I’m not sure if I should avoid eating this meal as well as dozen of others. Thanks folks

Depending which Actimel you buy, it can have up to 12g sugar per bottle. Actimel 0% plain has 3.3g. There are no health benefits to consuming probiotics, this has been shown in controlled experiments. Does nothing for your biome.

And which crackers did you eat?

12g sugar, OMG I didn’t realise. Dietician suggested it as I didn’t want to lose anymore weight, I never really thought about it, doh! I had cream crackers which I’m normally fine with as long as I only have six and it’s something I really enjoy occasionally. I will definitely check the packaging before buying anymore, can’t believe I was so stupid not to check.

Well bugger me, I have just hunted through my recycling bin and got out the packaging. How right were you, exactly 12g of carbs of which 12g are sugars. I’ve been having one of these a day for weeks now. Unbelievable that the diabetic dietician advised me to have them, I can’t believe it! Goes to show I need to be more vigilant.
Thank you so much Mike
PS she said she is probably going to be the one taking the Desmond course that I’m going to next month, um not much confidence in her now.

I think that you had my whole day's carb in one go - or even a bit more.
If the crackers were about 5 gm of carb each that is 30 and the Actimel on top is 42 - I set my maximum at 40 these days.

I had no idea about the actimel and that will go straight away. Can’t manage without a few carbs, if I was down to 40g a day I would disappear by September lol. X

My favourite crackers are Carr’s Water Biscuits, they are only manufactured in my home city so it’s the law we have to eat them! They are only 2.5 grams of carbs each, 4 is usually enough for a snack but I push the boat out and have 6 if it’s lunch! I only need 1 and a half units of NovoRapid. Result!

I like those as well, I could change but do like my cream crackers occasionally for lunch, yum

What crackers were they and what probiotic , only so I can look up the carbs.

I like Carr’s water biscuits . Thanks for reminding me as I haven’t had any for a long time

Hi Ljc, it was actimel strawberry flavour and just Morrison’s cream crackers. I know the crackers have a few carbs in them but I can’t go without any carbs at all. The actimel will be going however. Just amazed at myself that I didn’t even check, I’m putting it down to the menopause 🙂

Don’t blame yourself, Sue, you should have been able to have confidence in the DSN. Nowt to do with menopausing, if that’s a word. We’ve all made errors like that, and half of us don’t do the menopause, so can’t use that get out clause.:D

Actually I do restore gut bacteria after a bout of ulcerative colitis, which strips the colonic lining, but I get gastro resistant capsules loaded with bacteria from Healthspan. The bugs in Actimel get decimated by gastric acid.

Thanks Mikey, I do feel a bit of a twit, I check everything normally, oh well another lesson learnt, it’s an ongoing learning curve. X
