Hi can anyone tell me why when I don't eat anything after lunch (and I'm careful what I eat) does my count go way up when I test myself just before teatime?

Hello Bravo4

What insulin(s) are you using?

Assuming you are on MDI/basal:bolus if you are not eating any lunch it sounds to me like you are unknowingly doing a basal test when you skip lunch and your results seem to suggest that your basal insulin is a little short of what you need at that time of day.

Have a read of this which describes what basal insulin should do, and how to get it set correctly: http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

If you are eating lunch it could either be your lunch dose that is wrong, or a combination of lunch dose and basal.

Are you carb counting your food and matching doses to what you are eating?

Welcome to the forum Bravo4 -Are you on a pump or MDI.? - for us if this had been happening for several days it may mean that we need to change are ratio for our meal at lunchtime.are you on diffent ratios at the moment? for different times of the day/

Hi Bravo 4. welcome to forum. We prob need more info on what you are taking & when. Good luck sorting 🙂

Welcome to the forum bravo4 🙂

hiya yeah i can answer that as i have the same problem... see we think that if we dont eat then our sugar will go down.... thats not the way it works..... you see when you dont eat your body goes into starvation mode and your liver pumps out more sugar to compensate....

i went through a few weeks of limiting carbs but my sugar was higher.... my nurse told me i we have to have a little bit of low gi carbs often through the day to stop the liver pumping out the sugar.

its a weird old world and getting weirder

hope this helps

As EDUAD said, if you are missing meals and your sugars are rising then you most like don't have enough basal insulin onboard.
It took a while and it's not foolproof but I managed to get my basal sorted and now my glucose levels (under normal circumstances) barely change if I skip meals or eat at random times. Of course little things like change in activity levels / illness / buggering up previous meals bolus throw that all out the window!

It's worth a bit of effort to et the dose right though
