Putting the brakes on

Good morning.

After just 3 and a bit months of very strict lower carb dieting, careful meal food balancing, some more exercise, a million blood tests, I have a small reason to celebrate.

My BMI is now just below 25 and I feel great. (It was 34)
My weight has dropped to 66.3 Kg and my clothes don't fit anymore. Actually, my old clothes don't fit either!
My blood glucose levels are consistently between 4 and 6 and I am on no diabetes medication.
I eat meals that are so much more healthy and tasty and I can taste the natural sweetness far more.
My eyesight seems slightly better, no more headaches, dizziness, sweating, dihhorea, excessive thirst, etc
And I no longer crave sweet things at all.

So, soon I will need to put the brakes on my diet and return to a more normal weight sustaining one. My aim is 65Kg. Just an arbitrary goal, the real goal was to get my BMI down below 25.

So plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The hard bit will be to get myself to eat more! Sounds daft but its true. Having worked so hard to get to my goal, I really don't want to mess it up by putting on weight again.

Actually, my deeper concern comes from raising my calorie intake to a more sensible level whilst ensuring that I keep my Carbs low. Not sure how to do that yet. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I presume a diet of chocolate and wine gums and champagne is probably not good 🙂

Sadly no - but you can certainly start to be a bit more liberal with occasional treats.:D

Many many congratulations on your amazing achievement, and thanks for sharing it. It will be a great inspiration to those just starting out along that road of change.
Yes the feel good factor is an incredibly good reward, and I'm sure you won't find it too difficult to sustain.

It does become a way of life, and although you still need to keep your 'hand on the tiller' and keep checking that things are still good, it can all become less intense.

It is now a little bit of reverse of what you probably have been doing and now gradually re-introducing some more things you have been excluding. You probably know the daily level of carbs that you can tolerate, and I have found that this doesn't change with time very much - but we are all different and it may change for you.
Nuts are a useful food - low carb but higher cals.

Yes, nuts seem like a good idea. I will make a list of stuff that is higher in cals but not carbs, like cheese.

Thanks.

I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble @Gwynn I remember you were eating a fair amount of carbs before and had normal blood sugars. If I were you, I’d concentrate more on maintaining your healthy weight and general healthy eating. Carbs aren’t ‘bad’ but there are better carb choices than others, so choosing the better choice carbs could be another focus for you. There are a surprising number to explore if you’re looking at a new way of eating.

Well done on your weight loss 🙂

I understand that completely! I need pretty constant vigilance to make sure I don't drop too low or start stacking weight back on again - my bod & brain seem to be too dumb to give the right signals and if I just let things go I end up eating too much or too little.

Like you, I'm also a bit nervous about maintaining my weight loss. I could easily stand to slap a few more kg's on my stick-figurish frame but would it go out of control? And I like being skinny!

I realise that this migjht sound like somebody in the process of developing an eating disorder 🙂

Congratulations @Gwynn you have been the forum Poster boy! I can remember your early posts when you were so unsure of everything and the ‘numbers’ became the enemy. Now I read your posts and think wow look how far you have come in such a short time!!
I hope you get them definitive answer to your diagnosis at some point but I am so glad you found the forum!
I think you have enough awareness of what is the right or wrong for you! It’s all very personal isn’t. Some of us on here are low carb some are no carb some are any carbs but at the end of the day honesty about what goes into your body is the key! If you keep being honest about what you eat and keep moving I am sure the BMI will remain constant. You have helped me tremendously because you always asked the questions I wanted to ask! As we say here It’s gert lush!!!! Thank you!!! Best wishes Sara x

Wow well done! is that 24kg loss since November? My goodness that's a lot.
Keep up the good work and glad you are feeling much better.

Excellent, well done. 🙂

You have every right to celebrate @Gwynn

Congratulations on your weight loss and the terrific BG levels.

You will be an inspiration to new arrivals 🙂
