For two months I have followed a strict low carb low cal diet. My daily calorie intake is on average 800 cals and my carb intake around 80g. However I have gradually been putting on weight. I understand this may be because my metabolism thinks I am starving. I never feel hungry between meals and don’t snack. Is there any advice as to how to achieve a low carb balance with low calories and lose weight. Due to awaiting a replacement knee my usual level of activity has been severely reduced which hasn’t helped.

I started a low carb regime of approx 70g per day but did not worry about calories and lost weight. I was doing 3-4 miles walking a day as well as other things like gardening and housework. I then had an accident, rupturing my patellar tendon and was immobile for 3 months but stayed the same weight and then much more limited walking and activity even now 16 months on.
Can you try some of the seated exercises the NHS have on their website if walking is not on for you.
I don't know what sort of meals you are having but have a look at this link as it may give you some ideas for changing your diet, it has been successful in reducing blood glucose and weight loss. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
I trust you are looking at total carbs not just the as sugar in your estimate of 80g intake.

If you are sticking to 800 calories per day but gaining weight, then I would be going to your GP and asking them to test for anything else that may be going on e.g. thyroid.

Thankyou for your reply. I can still manage to walk three miles but not at the pace I used and do suffer by the end of it. I have tried some seated exercises as well plus using some gentle weights. Last year I started watching my carbs and lost almost a stone but this time I seem to be struggling. I shall have a look at the link you kindly sent.

Hello,
You don't mention if you are on meds. Oral steroids are known to cause weight gain so it might be worth speaking to your GP.

About ten years ago, well before diabetes was on my horizon, I had surgery for a ruptured oesophagus.( Long story.). I was on nil by mouth for ten days with a tube down my throat. A saline drip my only nourishment. . Not pleasant. . My only consolation was the thought of how much weight I would lose! At the end of my ordeal, I jumped on the scales to find I had gained two pounds!
I never did get an explanation.

@Ukkate, what sorts of things are you eating on a day to day basis?

I'm not suggesting for a moment that you're counting wrongly, but I do know some people find some foods less equal that others, both in terms of blood glucose and weight management.

I am guessing that question was intended to be addressed to the original poster @Bob2311 rather than @Ukkate1 ?

It may be because you were not doing much activity whilst in your hospital bed. A similar thing with my OH when in hospital for 2 weeks on fluids only for several days then a nutrient drip for a week with not much in the way of food and he put on 3kg much to his dismay.
