Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, I'm new here, but very much not new to diabetes - 25 years a type 1, and very holey fingers.

Hoping someone here can help me with a regional diabetes question. I'm currently in London and have been on a pump for 4 years. Next week I'm switching to the Tandem t-slim (with dexcom G6) and I'm super excited.

BUT we've just sold our flat and are planning to move to Cornwall in the autumn. I'm slightly paranoid the hospital (will be under Treliske I think) will not fund my pump / this model of pump. Does anyone have any experience of pump funding in Cornwall? Hopefully it's just my paranoia!

Hi Mia,
The pump service at Treliske leave a lot to be desired.
If I were you I would change to Exeter. Oh and just for your info Cornwall ccg suffer very badly from anal retention, so I wish you joy with them.

I hope you also fund your own Dexcom as the CCG refuses to allow anyone to have them.

if you are already funded and have the system set up then it shouldn't be an issue I would have thought?

Well Cornwall certainly fund pumps cos I have a pumping friend in Penzance. ISTR she's 'under' Truro Hosp, or is that her husband, definitely not Exeter anyway.

Surely it depends on where in Cornwall you would normally be referred to from a local GP?

LMAO, you don't know the CCG or treliske. When I went there they only did one pump and expected me to dump my new pump and accept a roche pump. Oh and also you could only pump with them as long as you used novarapid.

MrD is correct - will you have it by the time you move? Then you'll have 4 years to find your way around Cornwall NHS wise. However if you need help with it after you move and whoever doesn't know about T-Slim then presumably Tandem has a suitable Care Line for their users, same as Roche? @everydayupsanddowns - have they? (Mike has his eye on a T-slim too)

Thanks all. I'm currently funded by Kings College Hospital up here but wasn't sure if transferring the funding to Treliske would be a straight swap or if they'd have different funding criteria? And aware the t-slim is a relatively new pump so now sure how widely available it is but yes as you say I already have one.

We're moving to Falmouth so I'm assuming I'll be under the hospital as it's not far,. Hopefully all fine but want to make sure I don't end up with no supplies.

Well I know you had trouble Sue - but surprised to find you say they are still allowed right now to completely waste thousands of pounds of NHS money.

Oh god I'm finally getting rid of my Roche! Can't wait to replace it!

Lets just say they don't spend the money wisely.

Well they did allow pumpers to have the Animas, but that's gone now so not sure what they allow now.

They told me I couldn't keep the pump I had because if it went wrong the technicians at the hospital didn't know anything about that pump so wouldn't be able to fix it.

Treliske is known as the dump locally. Personally even if I were paid a million dollars I wouldn't set foot in the place again.

Do you fund your own sensors?

I'd wondered whether I might be able to refer myself to Derriford (plymouth) instead as my parents live there, if it is a problem. Might look into that as a back-up. x
You can be referred to where you like. Plymouth has a very good pump Clinic as does Exeter.

They're funded currently because I'm breastfeeding but that's only until the end of the year so expecting to self-fund anyway. Good to know I can self-refer elsewhere. Thankyou. x

Why don't you look to see if there is any information on the various Hospitals websites, or and contact them.

Well I am swtching to TSlim and they are doing the pump start remotely, so some remote/online support is certainly available - though I’ve not had any experience of it yet.

Could you contact the hospital and sound them out? Or ask your consultant to get in touch with them is that might carry more weight?

I've had no luck contacting Treliske but I did have a brilliant chat with the lead nurse at Derriford yesterday and he's confirmed I can self refer there and they will support the T-slim! They've not started offering them yet but are considering and would be keen to have me so they can see how it works. Phew! Such a weight off my mind. THANKYOU everyone, this has been super helpful.

I've got my virtual set up on Tuesday so fingers crossed this pump is a gamechanger.

Glad you have got yourself sorted.

That’s great news @MiaVision - hope it all works out well for you. One less thing to worry about!
