Protein in urine.

Hi everyone. Diagnosed with T2 a couple of years back. Prescribed metformin 500 mg. Addressing my weight issue and numbers now seem good. Had reason to go to drs for an unrelated problem and was asked to take a urine test in. Nurse said there was some protein in urine, I now have to do another urine test to be sent to lab. Has this happened to anyone else and should I be worried? Thank you.

Could be a UTI brewing or a lack, or excess, of some trace element. They need a repeat check to see if they need to look further into what's caused it.

Thank you for replying trophywench. I’m hoping that is so.I have managed to get in to see HCA this afternoon and will take a urine sample with me. Since being diagnosed with T2 I seem to worry about every little thing that crops up thinking it may be related to diabetes. I’m possible going to be living with this for a long time and need to learn to relax and get on with it!

Welcome to the forum

Microalbuminuria is one of the annual checks you should get annually. It spots tiny traces of protein which can pass through the ‘net filter’ of the kidneys.

I’ve had some over the years, but not consistently. It has risen and fallen over time.

Albumin is often reported as albumin:creatinine ratio (ACR)

Hopefully your next check will provide reassurance

Thank you Mike. Was seen by hca and urine tested, no trace of protein found this time. Phew! I can now breath again.

Forgive my ignorance @everydayupsanddowns .... I had a review (via phone) yesterday and have another blood test booked next week as the T2D Dr on my team was concerned with protein levels. That's all the nurse said so I don't understand where on the Hb report this is. I historically have been okay with liver/kidney function --- but as I have said elsewhere in posts I have been out of control for a few years and have had damage to blood vessels in eyes etc.

That's not easy to do especially in the beginning - but I try not to worry until result apt. there's not a lot you/we can do between sample /test apt and results - other than managing our diabetes. Also --- I tend to think things like: at least my liver function's good etc. I am not of an age where I would be having such intense medical MOTs and maybe that's not a bad thing. It's good to know some parts of my body are still working as they should be. Try to hold the silver linings.

It won’t be on the HbA1c as it’s a different measure (often done via a urine sample).

Mine are usually marked urine albumin / creatinine ratio. On the NHS app (where I get my results) I can drill-in to see the components, ratio, and also see historic results to get an idea of any ‘direction of travel’.

Isn't it under U&E - urea and electrolytes - since that's a blood as opposed to urine test? I get the urine test every couple of years, whereas the blood one is just tacked onto the end of the list of other blood tests before most regular diabetes checks hence more often.

I thought both were supposed to be annual? I know I get a urine test every year, and I presume the blood test is also there (though they test so many things I don't check).

Well the last test recorded on my NHS App was in 2022 - but they don't put any hospital results on mine. Only if they instigate tests. It requires somebody at the GP practice to copy the hospital results once they receive them so unless they are required to take action, they do not record them on the App. eg my OH's lab results he's had, to serve both for his COPD from the GP and the hospital are also using them for his AAA which he's having operated on NEXT Tuesday - came back saying what his cholesterol results are amongst all the others. GP immediately decided to prescribe statins and advised husband by text, giving the reason that his chol level is increased. ?Que? they're lower than they were last November and they've reduced every test (twice a year) for the last few (4-ish) years in fact every test since his AAA was very first diagnosed so he got seen by a Vascular Consultant at the hospital who said not big enough to operate on so watch closely and wait then pounce and agreed with him ( ie. The Expert!) to start taking Ezetimibe (rather than a statin) which he is still taking and the same consultant's team have not even mentioned statins to him. Changing any drug a matter of days before a planned operation to the main artery in your body!!!??? or even ?!?!?!
Sorry all, that turned into a rant. Just so so annoying not having all our medical test results displayed online in one dedicated place especially when our surgery had used to do that when they used System Online before dropping that, for the NHS App.

How frustrating for you both Jenny! I’m sure they are all supposed to arrive in the NHS app eventually. Though all my regular checks seem to come via the GP vampire now.

Ah yes! Thanks for the reminder about U&E. I get nagged for urine if I don’t take a sample for my annual review checks, but it can be a nuisance to have to remember to stock up on the little pots they need you to use!

Well my hospital clinic routinely give me the blood and urine test forms ready for next time just after I get there and go in to have my height, weight and BP done and put onto the computer ready for whoever I'm seeing that day (Nurse or Dr or both) and the urine test 'bag' already has a pristine bottle in it onto which they have stuck a self adhesive pre-printed label identifying me - saves me having to write on it in tiny letters! (which I usually forget to do until I've carefully decanted urine into it and sealed the lid ..... when getting one from the GP)
Our GP doesn't have a vampire now except a part time one who only works Thurs and Fri mornings and can only book the same week - otherwise book via Swiftqueue. Is why we had to go to the far side of Coventry from our house for both of our blood tests then from there (though did nip in to see Clive who works at his house on the way, to get a new battery in my best watch - fortunately he'd got one, cos they're weeny - but he won't touch crap anyway. He doesn't mince his words if you take him the Rolex you bought for a £10 in Cairo 😱) to Coventry hospital the geographically opposite side of Cov to the blood test pharmacy for Pete to see an anaesthetist - who also didn't mince her words. No smoking anywhere near him from now on. Shame she can't ban every human from breathing out though cos the very first time I took myself out of the back door after we got home again - Pete started coughing. I laughed and said 'It's a sign you've packed in smoking my lad!' - but he hasn't stopped yet cos he actually has a chest infection so has had to ring this morning and cancel his op, and start his latest rescue pack - ABs & steroids. They will reschedule it.
