Well, the story to date:
...Hospital A (names changed to protect the... lol), with massive waiting lists & overbooked clinics had been v briefly examining then zealously lasering my bad eye (for lack of any other plan) at every opportunity, despite little evidnce of new vessels and a never clearing bleed. After nearly a year of this, without being told anything & with good BG control I was getting a bit freaked out so paid out for a private 2nd opinion. Lo & behold, after actually taking his time to take a really good thorough look at the eye, the new doc spotted the problem, which was some scarring from all the lasering, which had snagged a blood vessel and was tearing it as it contracted, causing all the bleeds. He confirmed I have no active retinopathy and the lasering would not do any good at all - just burning good tissue for now improvement! He said I needed a vitrectomy so they could remove the scar tissue & sort the eye out, and that I could be referred to his care under Hospital B. He even gave me a photo of the vessel/tissue! 🙄
So I went back to the GP, he wrote me a referral letter & I went back to the clinic at hospital A to get discharged from their books, offered the doc a view of the pic at which he said that he'd spotted & sketched that scarring some months (& a few laser sessions!) back... 😱 Anyway, grrr, got discharged from that place.... This was in late May / early june.
Come the end of June I hadn't heard anything, so called Hospital B to check if they'd sent an appt, as some post had gone missing around that time... they claimed never to have received the GP referral... so a few calls later & they confirmed that the surgery had now faxed through a copy referral & it would be processed.... anyway, weeks & weeks of calls & chasing later, and I have just received an appointment, YAY!!!! Only for the outpatients clinic, apparently we have to go through the rigaramole of being assessed again as this time it's nhs & before he saw me privately, so it will still be months & months before I actually get treated, but I guess it's progress of a sort. Meanwhile I was working from home (as much of my job as I can do that is) but the never ending nature of it all was getting me down... but maybe now there is some kind of light at the end of the tunnel! Fingers crossed....

Oh Twitchy! At last you are getting somewhere! You really should not have had to go through all this for the problem to be identified and treatment planned, and to have to go through ineffectual lasering is bordering on assault! 😱 Hope things go much more smoothly from now on 🙂

I hope it is all soon sorted for you. I appreciate it doesn't seem like much progress, but it is progress of sorts.

Well done Twitchy for getting it all sorted in spite of their lack of care.🙂

Pleased that you have an end in sight and a good end at that !:D

It beggars believe doesn't it. When I was under the NHS I kept getting told I couldn't have hypo's as I was type 2.

It took a private appointment and a week in hospital to find out actually what was going on. That was in March and I feel so much better now - partly because I now know it isn't all in my mind. I was told I was actually quite poorly and the consultant wondered how I had stayed on my feet each day!!

Anyway back to you - I am so pleased you finally have found out the real problem and I bet you feel much better already because of this. I do hope things get sorted -even if they do take a bit of time. Fingers crossed for you 🙂

I think one thing Private consultation gives you is time to tell it exactly how it is - rather than a quick 5 mins on the NHS. I am not blaming anyone mind.

Good news finally, I am happy for you.........

Hopefully after this treatment you can start to forget about problematic eyes........🙂

Hi Twitchy I'd been thinking about you lots and wondering how you were getting on. I'm so glad that you've got the appointment but so frustrated about everything that you've had to go through. I know that it isn't easy, and certainly easier said than done, but try to keep focusing on the positive things. PM me anytime you want to chat or have a rant. Big hugs Amanda xxx

So pleased you have good news at last Twitch x

At last the penny drops! I'm so glad you're finally getting somewhere. XXXXX

Twitchy I'm DELIGHTED to read this :D:D I keep thinking about you & your eyes, I'm so glad to think that you're finally getting somewhere.

FWIW I was referred by my original eye consultant to the specialist at Moorfields in Jan 2007, I had my vitrectomy in Nov 2007. It would have been sooner, but I was pregnant at the time so had to wait till my daughter was old enough to leave. So it could be sooner than you think - here's hoping!

PM me any time you want to.

That's great news Twitchy. I hope things progress rapidly now.

Yay! Progress - and in the correct direction! Woot! Woot!

Yay!

Had the appt today, it was a pre-runner to the main appt (a few weeks) with the consultant...today was for an ultrasound on the eye...something it turns out is "routine" at BMEC...and I have never, ever had done before at my old hospital, despite being treated for 'diabetic retinopathy' & persistent bleeds for about 4 years now!

I was soooo impressed! Despite being an hour and 1/4 drive each way, (as opposed to about half hr at old hosp), I was in & out within 1/2 hr (miracle!) ...and wasn't stuck in a queue for a space in the car park for an hour before, so all in all it even took less time! Everyone was really friendly & courteous, no-one made the "uh, you've got bad control then?" put down comment (er, no actually!!) like i used to get every time at the old place, and.... the loos were clean!! :D😉 So all in all, so far 10/10! :D For the first time in a long long while, I'm starting to feel a bit more positive about maybe getting this eye fixed one day! Yay!!

Twitchy, this is wonderful news after the palaver you've had to put up with. Let's hope you get the surgery date soon and the whole horror can be put behind you.
