Hi All,
I'm awaiting test results and, if they go as I suspect, I will need to start injecting insulin.

Can anyone confirm the following with respect to driving for me?:-
  • I will not be allowed to drive a car or small van for three months after I start injecting. This will allow me time to adjust to the meds and recognise the signs of a hypo. During this time the DVLA will revoke my license.
  • After three months. I will be able to get my license back assuming I get medical OK and am able to provide records of regular blood sugar tests - assuming I have not had a hypo where I needed assistance.
  • If I have had a hypo that needed assistance, the clock resets and I have to wait another three months.

I'm looking to confirm these basics to keep my employer up to date. Driving is an integral part of my job so will need to get my company to be aware I will not be mobile for at least three months.

I'm worried about this, obviously. A bit of information will help abate the anxiety

Thanks in advance,

There is no requirement to stop driving a car, (or probably small van. but I’d have to check that) you just need to tell the DVLA and they will issue you with a three year license provided they are satisfied as to your answers as to hypo awareness and not needing assistance. For lorries or public service vehicles, then the 3 months worth of records comes in.
