Does anyone have any experience or information of how these two drugs, Priadel (lithium carbonate) and gliflozins (canagliflozin/empagliflozin/dapagliflozin) work out when taken together?

I have searched fairly hard and come up with nothing. I am particularly concerned as to whether the kidneys end up suffering. Of course, I have read PIL's, but they haven't helped.

After here, Ithink I will try to contact drug companies themselves.

Thanks.

Hi Struma, we do have members here on gliflozins, alongside other medications, but I haven't heard of Priadel before. I would suggest going to your pharmacist and asking them, they are usually very well up on possible medication interactions, often more so than GPs or nurses, and the drug companies may only be able to advise you on their own medication, not the interactions.

Thank you Northener, for your reply.
It was the Pharmacist within my GP Surgery that advised me to ask here!
It is indeed a complex problem, but feel I need to explore avenues before throwing the towel in.

The metabolic pathway of the gliflozins means that they don’t interfere with any other renal function, so the excretion of lithium occurs as normal. I know care has to be taken with lithium therapy when there is reduced renal function, but there is no way that gliflozins reduce renal function in any way other than what they are designed to do.

Certainly, there is no record of any interaction in the BNF or NICE advice, or internationally. There should be no problem taking both, but beware of the potential side effects of gliflozins such as hypoglycaemia. For that reason you should be supplied with a blood glucose testing kit, and a supply of strips, particularly if you drive.

Thank you so much Mike, this is the information I've been after, for a long while.
I shall be alright from a hypoglycaemia point, because I'm on basal and bolus Insulins too. Thanks.
