Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone! *I've just come across this site today and I wish I'd found it a lot sooner for advice!!

My story - well, it all started when I became pregnant and at my 28 week blood tests they discovered I had what they at the time was gestational diabetes. I spent Easter weekend in hospital after being admitted with a blood sugar reading of 28.2!! My consultant was pretty convinced all through my pregnancy that I had developed type 1 and not gestational as I wasn't overweight (i was 9 stone when I was 6 months pregnant!) and didn't fit the profile but he couldn't be sure until I'd had my baby.

Fast forward a few months and I had to be induced at 37 weeks because of my diabetes (and complications because of this) and my baby spent a week in ICU due to very low blood sugars and had to be tube fed.

6 weeks after my baby was born, I had it confirmed that i was type 1. The hospital have told me that I would have probably gotten the diabetes later on in life but they think the pregnancy was too much for me and it triggered it off.

They asked me countless times if I had any family history of diabetes and although my father is type 2, they said that would have had no bearing on my diagnosis but very*strangely, my younger brother was diagnosed with MODY 3 weeks ago and the hospital are very interested in our cases as we were diagnosed within 6 months of each other!*

My baby is now 4.5 months old and my diabetes is quite well controlled although my insulin dependancy has started to increase lately and my consultant has told me my "honeymoon period" is coming to an end and my pancreas is now dying off.*

So, that is my story! I'm sure I'll find this board very helpful as I start to carb count and I'm hoping to go on a diabetes education course very soon.*

Welcome to the forums allybongo 🙂

I'd be willing to bet that you and your father both will test positive for MODY3 if they test you. MODY3 tends to be very strongly genetically inherited.

Congratulations on your baby! Not long till they start getting really mobile and the fun really starts! :D

Thanks Mark!

What is MODY3?

My father has adult onset Type 2 diabetes. He is diet controlled and has never had any medication atall, he's very good with it. Strangely, he doesn't fit the profile for type 2 diabetes either (he is not overweight and never has been!)

Welcome to the forum allybongo 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but many, many congratulations on the birth of your baby! 🙂

What insulin regime are you on, and have you been offered any education courses, such as DAFNE or BERTIE? Have a look in our Useful links thread - worth getting the JDRF pack for the Rufus Bear, I'm sure your little one will appreciate him and it will help you to explain your diabetes as the little one grows up!

Please do ask any questions you may have. We have lots of members with all sorts of experiences, including quite a few Mums who were diagnosed in pregnancy, or have had babies before or since diagnosis. I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Allybongo and a warm welcome from me, sorry to hear of your diagnosis nobody likes to here those words your diabetic but your here now and the wonderful people who are part if this.

p.s Congratulations on the birth of your baby.

Hi Allybongo and welcome to the forum..

Yep I'm similar to you, I found out I was diabetic in the same phone call that I found out I was pregnant, so right at the begining of my pregnancy... Sadly my consultant wasn't on the ball like yours, so it lead to some extreme suffering as my consultant said I was GD, then T2 followed by I was a non-compliant T2😱

I became extremely ill that my GP took me out of the diabetic clinic and referred me to the medical Endo.. I never went back to the diabetic clinic until I started my fight for an insulin pump 7 years ago thankfully my original consultant had retired...

Apart from my husband being a T1 diabetic also, there isn't any other diabetic in my family... My twin and I are the youngest of 9 siblins, and at 47 I'm a great-great aunty😱

Thank you all for your replies and for being so welcoming! I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of questions for you all!

I definatley am Type 1, they did the anti-bodies test and it was confirmed. I think myself and my brother have just been really unlucky.

My consultant has told me about the education courses so myself and my husband are going to do one. I've found that as the months have gone on he's become more understanding but in the beginning it was very difficult for him. My friends are mostly good with me but I have one friend who works with someone who is diabetic and he doesnt look after himself so she thinks it's ok to ram cakes and sweets down your throat and just take extra insulin. I've given up talking to her about it as she doesn't understand the consequences of doing that and it's a shame as she is a close friend to me.

Are there any courses which are recommended to do or are they all the same?

Some people just don't realise how serious diabetes can be if you don't respect it and take good care of yourself :(

You'll probably have to take whatever course you get offered. The main Type 1 courses are DAFNE and BERTIE, but different PCTs often run their own courses that may have different formats and contents. My course was 3 days spread over 3 weeks, whereas DAFNE is a full week. 🙂 They all cover the same principles and teach you what to watch out for, it's just that some are more thorough than others 🙂 Good idea to take hubby along with you 🙂

Hi Allybongo,

Welcome to the forum! Everyone's really friendly here 🙂
