Pregnancy and hypos

Hi! I have just found out I'm pregnant (4 weeks), second child. My hypos are HORRENDOUS. They are constant and requiring like 3-5 hypo treatments. I use a t:slim pump but have had to turn control IQ off and go into manual mode. I have halved my basal rates and doubled my carb ratios and corrections to try and stop the hypos. Unfortunately my diabetes team were not at all helpful with my first pregnancy and I have emailed them about this already but no response. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this normal? I don't remember hypos the severe until 6 weeks with my first pregnancy.

Welcome @T1DS 🙂 Sorry to hear about your hypos. You’re right that they normally happen slightly later, but nothing is set in stone and even for the same woman different pregnancies will have slightly different patterns for blood sugars.

My first thought is that you should ensure nothing else is causing the hypos. For example, undiagnosed coeliac disease can cause hypos. There are other causes too. How long have you been having these hypos? Have you changed the insulin in your pump (change vial and fill reservoir) just in case it’s an insulin problem? That would be good to rule out. Also, could your site be contributing? Occasionally I’ll get a pump site that makes the insulin seem supercharged and whatever I do, I seem to go along in the 4s and 5s even with hypo treatments and extra carbs and insulin reduction.

Congratulations.

From my experience with diabetes and pregnancy is there isn't a normal at all. And in all women each pregancy can be very different, do not expect the same as with your first child. Different stages impact the body differently and as with diabetes it could be 1 of a number of things causing this, as Inka said check the usual suspects first.

Could it be the increased weather temperature? That always impacts my insulin reaction.

Keep tweaking as you are until you get the levels right, that's all you can do.

Any chance you can move diabetes team? I don't know if you have healthcare options, we are lucky as we are near 3 trusts and I know where we live there can be patient choice based on this.
