Hi all,

Just found out I am prediabetic. Anyone know z good site for meal planning when you have IBS, where lentils and fibrous veggies wreck havoc on your gut. I'm so lost

Welcome @Pre D 🙂 There are meal plans and recipes on this site. Could you just adjust as needed to omit or substitute foods you can’t tolerate?:

If you’re only in the pre-diabetes zone, a few small sustained changes might help, as will weight loss (if needed) and exercise.

Welcome to the forum.
Did they tell you what your HbA1c is?
You may find that small changes are enough to turn it around. Please fire off any question you have. We've all been there.

Tackling 1 change at a time will help you feel less lost. Reducing / kicking the sweet stuff is clearly a priority.
Carbohydrates convert to sugar when eaten, so reduced portions of anything high in carbs helps (just make a habit of checking the "Total Carbs" info on the back of food packets)
As Inka says, weight loss if needed helps. Were you told that people are more likely to be insulin resistant if they carry weight around their stomach?
Just take it 1 day at a time as you learn a little more

Many people have found reducing their carbohydrate intake can help with IBS symptoms.
But as pre diabetic some modest changes should be sufficient. Have a look at this link as you may find some of the ideas there will help and you can pick and choose suitable foods for your IBS, no need to eat food that you cannot tolerate, in fact lentils and pulses are high carb so people tend to be wary of them. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
You may also find something useful on the web site of Guts UK which has lots of info about a whole range of gut conditions.

Welcome to the forum @Pre D

Sorry to hear you have been told you are at increased risk of diabetes. Balancing multiple conditions with different needs can be really challenging, but we have several forum members who live with IBS, so you aren’t alone.

One option that might help is to begin keeping a food diary of the menu you choose that suits your IBS, just to give you an idea of your baseline carbohydrate intake.

There may be obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, but you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Note down everything you eat and drink, along with a reasonable estimate of the total carbohydrate content in your meals and snacks - it doesn’t have to be gram-perfect, the nearest 5-10g is fine. It might sound like a bit of a faff, and will involve weighing portions, squinting at the fine print on packaging, and possibly looking up things on the internet, but it will give you a really good idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your current menu. Once you can see which meals or snacks are your ‘big hitters’, and where carbs might be unexpectedly lurking, the process might also suggest some likely candidates for swaps, portion reductions, or using lower carb alternatives and hopefully find ones that suit your IBS.
