At risk of diabetes
Hello, I'm in-between blood tests to confirm prediabetes and have been given some reading to do in the meantime, hence finding this forum through Diabetes UK. I had gestational diabetes when pregnant 15-16 years ago and should have looked after myself much more since then but unfortunately, I'm a comfort eater and have steadily put on weight over the years and so now I find myself here. I'm not really surprised, but I am really disappointed in myself. I'm hoping I can turn things around but at the same time trying to be realistic about the challenges ahead.

Perhaps you might like to add this link to your reading list, I found good explanation and do's and don'ts for following a low carb approach which is one of the options which many find successful in losing weight and reducing blood glucose. There are menu plans and ideas to suit different tastes and budgets. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
The website sugarfreelondoner can satisfy peoples desire for cakes and biscuits with their low carb recipes.

Welcome to the forum @SeasideGJ

Don’t be too hard on yourself. It can be very easy to put off self-care, and just continue with our general way of things while life pulls us in multiple other directions.

You can’t change the past, but the really important thing is that you have decided to act now. To focus on helping yourself towards a healthier you. That’s a huge step, and you shouldn’t underestimate it.

And the good news is that we have seen lots of newbies arrive having been told about being at risk of diabetes (sometimes given the shorthand term prediabetes) who have been able to make some tweaks and changes to their menu, lose some weight, and have successfully steered away from a diagnosis with diabetes.

Many later reflect that the changes they made have left them feeling healthier and happier, with more energy and enthusiasm for life than they have had for years! Being told you are at risk of diabetes can become a sort of catalyst that prompts you to make some positive changes you’ve been struggling to find motivation for before.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Thank you for replying, and for the advice. I'm having a look at the website now.

Thank you for your kind and reassuring response. I've got a lot of reading and reflecting to do - I'm off work with Covid and feeling pretty rough so there's nothing I can do but read! This forum seems like a really helpful, supportive and informative place to start.

That sounds to be at the top end of prediabetic.
Often the problem is that most dietary plans are aimed at people who need to lose weight, however as it is carbohydrates that will convert to glucose then you still need to reduce those but can compensate by having more protein and healthy fat which do not convert to glucose. Full fat dairy, eggs, nuts, avocado, meat, fish, cheese, veg and salads whilst having only small portions of any high carb foods but also eating enough food.
Have a look at this link for some menu ideas which although aimed at people who need to lose weight may help you with some inspiration for a way forward. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
