Hi my Hb level is 45 ,I'm trying to lose weight all I know is salad with fish ,it would really help if I had a list of things I should eat, people have given me recipes but this is no good to me I'm no chef ,all I eat is as above .I got sick of chicken now I'm getting sick of fish , thanks in advance for any advice, also being Hb 45 is there anything anyone could tell me about that , kind regards iggy
Hi there and welcome. The pre diabetic range is 42-47 so you are in the middle. With a few tweaks to your eating, you should get your HbA1c below 42 quite easily. I suggest you cut down on the carbs you are eating - bread, potato, rice, pasta, root vegetables, processed foods and most fruit, and increase your vegetable content. It's good you like salad, and these suggestions should also help you lose weight. I have quite a lot of eggs - omelettes, hard boiled with cubed cheese and salad. Another of my favourites is prawns with cottage cheese.
I'm a cheats cook, using quite a lot of prepared vegetables and the microwave. Or I wrap things in tinfoil and bake in the oven. Part of this Forum is dedicated to food recipes and queries, which might give you some ideas. There must be some very simple things to make.
Hi Felinia, thanks so much for your reply , something I forgot to mention is IV had heart attacks so have to watch my cholesterol , so cheese eggs ,prawns unfortunately are a no no for me (I think) ,what fruit is good and what fruit should I avoid?? ,And what veg is good/bad , kind regards iggy
Hi, Now I understand just fish and chicken. I know cheese is not so good, but I thought eggs and prawns in moderation was OK. I also seem to remember being told that medical opinion had changed a bit, and that cholesterol is mainly produced by the liver function, not diet, so does not carry so much weight. I just remember 20 years ago, when I lost almost 5 stone, my cholesterol went up, and I was so frustrated!!!
The best fruits are those ending in "berries". Grapes are sugar bombs, as is most tropical fruits. An apple can contain 20gm carbs. The best veg is that grown above ground - cauliflower, runner beans, cabbage, spring greens, broccoli, kale. I'm sure others can come up with more veg. I also like squash, swede.
That's very helpful bless you for taking the time to help me I really appreciate it, wow 5 stone !you should have been knighted well done you, thanks again stay safe keep well x
Hi, welcome to the forum, not really a diagnosis you wanted after your heart problems.
There are lots of simple recipe ideas if you look around the various posts, sometimes people sneak them in among another topic but the food and recipe section has lots of good ideas. Home made soups and tray bakes are quite popular meals, salads can be made to be tasty and interesting with a few additions. Sugar free jelly with berries are a good desert or yoghurt with seeds or nuts.
You will have to make your own mind up about the cholesterol issue but there is quite a bit of information around about the various opinions.
