Every prandial and post-prandial reading I've taken over the last couple of weeks has given a slight increase each time with the occasional bigger spike when trying out 'dodgy' food. This evening, however, it went down from 7.3 to 6.6. I had quite a large helping of rump steak and loads of stir fry veg with a glass of red wine. I fully expected an increase but was (pleasantly) surprised to see a decrease. Is this normal?

I'd expect a lower reading with a low carb meal of steak and vegetables especially if you stir fried them in oil. The red wine will have helped slow the process down too (just like having vinegar on food). Not that I'm suggesting your wine tasted like vinegar obviously! :D

I've sometimes had lower levels after a carb fest. Never managed to work that one out. Oddly though, it does happen.

Surprised this evening, when I decided to have the same meal, but chicken instead of rump steak. Basically the same veg, cooked the same way, except for the addition of some roasted kale, and without the glass of wine. My pre meal reading was a pleasing 5.5 ( the lowest I've been) but two hours later it had risen to 9. Very confusing.

Well alcohol does stop your liver kicking out any extra 'glucose' it happens to think you need.

Just maybe - your liver hasn't got itself used to you wanting to have lower BGs yet cos in the past for however long, when you've eaten your dinner it's shot up - and when it doesn't, Mr Liver thinks OOer, he's in trouble here. Better help him out then!

I recommend a glass of wine with every evening meal - the liver is capable of several things, but the one thing it absolutely can't do - is multi- process, so distract it by making it process the alcohol !

If I want to treat myself to some carbs with dinner or even a dessert when dining out I have a couple of glasses of red wine and I know my BG will be under 7 and sometimes under 6!

Interesting theories/facts about the 'medicinal' effects of red wine and one which I am not averse to experimenting with. Mind you is it worth trading the expense of test strips for stocking up the wine cellar? 🙂
