Pre diabetic

Hi everyone,
Just after some help really as I am very confused, doesn’t take much

I had gestational diabetes 6 years ago, picked up at 37 weeks. I have been pre diabetic since and had annual tests being 42/43. HbA1c being 46 just recently. Also at that point got a positive thyroid result which they can’t treat until I have a repeat at the end of the month, with it being my first positive result. GP says I don’t have diabetes.

Do diabetic symptoms and thyroid symptoms mirror each other, as I still don’t feel 100%. I also have coeliac disease and fibromyalgia.
Many thanks in advance
Lisa
Hi Loopswebb

Diabetes and hypothyroidism often happen together (they did with me and I have read that it is a common combination. The untreated thyroid symptoms of dizziness, tiredness, lethargy and feeling generally unwell will soon improve once you are started on levothyroxine, which needs to be checked regularly to get you on the right dose but it will make you feel much better almost immediately.

I am assuming you are eating the correct diet to counter the coeliac disease and I know next to nothing about fibromyalgia, but can only say hang on in there, once you get the thyroid sorted out you will have more energy to deal with the other conditions and take your diet and exercise on which will help all of your conditions. Look after yourself x

Hi, thank you for your reply. They tested again for my thyroid but came back negative so no further action was taken. Yes I’m sticking to my diet, might have the odd slip up if ingredients have changed on things I’ve eaten and not realised. Still feeling rubbish, just hoping the multi vitamins I’m taking kick in soon

I hope they will monitor your thyroid regularly anyway but glad its negative at present. The blurred vision, thirst and tiredness are all diabetic symptoms, and there are many -it is such a complex disease so I am glad you are taking supplements to try and boost those areas that are weaker. It is also worth noting that even after a diabetes diagnosis (HbA1c of 48 or over), this can be controlled and reduced (diet and/or meds) but going under 48 does not mean you are not diabetic, it means that your HbA1c is under control. There are conflicting opinions about this but the medical instruction and information I have received says that once you are diabetic, that's it, after that all you can do is either control it or allow it to deteriorate with all its subsequent complications. It is quite a journey learning how to live with it, control it and understand what your body is telling you and we are all different and unique in how we adapt and endure - just try to stay as healthy as you can with diet, exercise and sleep, which affects weight, fitness and ability to cope and be healthy.
I wish you luck and that your symptoms are soon under control and you can live your life with more ease. Take care x

Thank you, that makes a lot more sense to me x

Hi, sorry me again. I’ve just had my routine pre diabetes bloods taken on Friday and it has shown my plasma glucose level as 7.4 and HbA1c as 51 which has gone up. GP rang and have said I’ve got to get it redone on the 20th dec. just normal not fasting, does this mean I have diabetes now? If so how can I tell which one? Is there anything I can do to reduce it? Many thanks in advance

You posted some months ago saying you were in the prediabetes zone and had a blood glucose monitor. Have you been testing and making adjustments to your carbohydrate intake as that should have reduced your levels not increased it so giving you a diabetes diagnosis as 48mmol/mol is the magic line. Most likely it will be Type 2. You would need other tests to confirm anything else.
Following the advice that a few people posted before, that is reducing carbohydrates and testing before and 2 hours after your meal to identify foods which are a problem for you to tolerate should help you bring the levels down.
You should be aiming at no more than a 2-3mmol/l increase and no more than 8.5 mmol/l after your meal otherwise your meal was too carb heavy.
By taking some action now you can do this.

Thank you for getting back to me. Yes I did get one and did start and then got side lined when I got prescribed iron and I started to feel better so didn’t really keep a check on readings. I will start testing again, Do I need to do the testing on a daily basis or just when I don’t feel right?

If you get other tests done to see whether you are type 1 or type 2 ( type 2 is more likely but you never know). You need to test before eating and 2 hours after and keep a food diary until you can get your doctors to give you more advice
