Hi everyone,
Just after some help really as I am very confused, doesn’t take much

I had gestational diabetes 6 years ago, picked up at 37 weeks. I have been pre diabetic since and had annual tests being 42/43. HbA1c being 46 just recently. Also at that point got a positive thyroid result which they can’t treat until I have a repeat at the end of the month, with it being my first positive result. GP says I don’t have diabetes.

Do diabetic symptoms and thyroid symptoms mirror each other, as I still don’t feel 100%. I also have coeliac disease and fibromyalgia.
Many thanks in advance
Lisa

Just that I’m tired all the time, thirsty, vision had be sometimes blurred, can go dizzy when sitting or standing but just for seconds. Just feeling generally all to pot

With your possible thyroid issue and the coeliac and fibro, it must be hard to tell what’s making you feel so rough. Tiredness and thirst are symptoms of diabetes.

When was your most recent HbA1C?

Ok. As you say, 46 doesn’t count as diabetic but it does count as prediabetic. Your HbA1C has increased slightly from 42/43 so I think it’s worth speaking to your doctor or nurse and/or considering buying a home blood glucose meter so you can keep an eye on your own blood sugar to see what’s happening with it.

Sounds a good plan, how often would I need to check it? Thank you for your kind advice

I’d do a check first thing when you wake up, then look at planning a regime of testing before meals, then two hours after that meal (eg breakfast at 7am, test just before eating then test again at 9am). You do not have to test these all in one day or every day. Maybe do these tests over a few days. The idea is to see how your body is coping with food. Write down what you eat for the meal too.

A few tests like that will help see how you’re doing.

There are a couple of glucose meters recommended here because they’re reasonably priced and the test strips aren’t expensive.

Let me find the names and I’ll post here again for you. The main cost of meters is the test strips.

Welcome to the forum @Loopswebb

Sorry to hear about the symptoms you are experiencing. It must be frustrating and worrying not knowing what is causing what, and what practical steps you can take to improve things, but I agree that getting an understanding of what your BGs are up to might be a really helpful piece of the puzzle.

Hi sorry to be a pest again. I managed to get a testing kit and done my first one this morning. Did one at 7.30 and it was 8.8, then had a banana as not really a breakfast person. Tested 2hours later and it was 8.0. Are these good ranges as I have no idea. Thyroid test came back as negative so at a loss. Think it could be my fibromyalgia xx

Hello again @Loopswebb

Well there are two things happening there... the first is that you did not see a big rise at the 2hr mark from the banana (any brief rise at maybe 1hr had already gone back down) - so the banana suited you well.

The second thing is the numbers themselves, and your starting point of 8.8 was a little bit high. Breakfast readings are often the last to come into line unfortunately. If you can get lower than that, so much the better, as long as you stay above 4 🙂

Ideally eventually you will be wanting to aim for 4-7 before meals and less than 8.5 by 2 hrs after meals.

Hope this helps

Thank you, think I understand. It’s like a minefield to get your head around

Just had another HbA1c and the result is 47, doctors say it’s abnormal, but to be expected but have been given no advice. The result is steadily going up in the last 6 years since being gestational diabetic at 37 weeks. They have also picked up I’m anaemic and low vit d - so taking multi vitamins to try and get it up. So al to pot at the min. How often should I check the finger test?

many thanks in advance

The symptoms you described does sound as if your HbA1C of 47 would indicate you are at the top end of prediabetes but if you are anaemic then that can affect the accuracy of the HbA1C so you perhaps need to request a fructosamine test (I think that's what it is called) as that would be more accurate and give you better information about where you are at.
Reducing carbohydrates in your diet would be a good move and that should start to make you feel better.
