At risk of diabetes
Hi all newbie here
Last week i was sent a letter from my gp informing me that i was pre diabetic.
I have to change my lifestyle which i will find hard to do as i work from home and dont get out much.
I dont eat healthy as i love cakes, takeaways, chocolate, i drink 1 can of coke a day .
I have an appointment next week with my doctor to discuss what happens next.

Hi - sorry to hear that you're 'at risk' of diabetes but welcome to the forum. It would be advisable to take this early warning as a wakeup call to make some changes to your diet, however hard that's going to be, to become more active and (if needed) to lose some weight. Many of us have turned things around in that way, even after getting an actual diabetes diagnosis. Hopefully the risks will be explained to you during your GP appointment but in the meantime please feel free to ask any questions.

Welcome to the forum, many find themselves in your situation but it should be a wakeup call that your current diet is doing you no favours so some changes will be needed if you are to avoid slipping over into a diabetic diagnosis.
Certainly the cakes, takeaways and chocolate unless the occasional piece of dark variety as a treat will need to be cut out until your blood glucose is at a better level. Coke is fine as long as it is the Diet one.
To prepare you for your appointment have a read of this link which has good explanation and some menu plans for a low carbohydrate approach which many have found successful at reducing blood glucose and losing weight if needed. Good luck with making some positive changes to your menu. Good that you can already see some things you want to change already!

Try not to be disheartened about being told you are at risk of diabetes, many people on the forum later reflect that their news became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years.

One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes risk is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

That doesn’t mean you have to avoid all starchy carbs entirely - but reducing portion sizes so that your metabolism can handle your overall carb intake (and keeping sweet and sugary things to a minimum) can be a very effective strategy 🙂
