Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi everyone, I've just been told by my GP that I'm pre-diabetic. I can't say I'm surprised, 58 and the shape of a(very large) apple! So, I'm hoping to sort out my diet and exercise so that I don't actually progress to Type II diabetes, any tips would be gratefully received 🙂
Thanks
Tracey

Welcome to the forum, you have come to the right place to be able to pick up lots of information and ideas for changing your life style. It is generally a wake up call and do something about it.
As all carbohydrates convert to glucose which is what gives elevated blood glucose in diabetes then reducing those in your diet will have considerable impact. Weight loss also helps.
There is no need to have NO carbs but just reduce them to a level that your body can tolerate.
Take time to educate yourself and make a plan of action. This link might help you with some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/ I found it all makes sense.
What is important is to find an approach which you enjoy and is sustainable rather than A DIET for a few weeks or months but is a new way of eating.

Learn that carbs are not sugar yet they become glucose in your bloodstream.
White starchy foods are the worst culprits, bread, pasta, rice etc.

Hit low carb, start walking, lose a little weight & you should be good

Hi - just joined you all. I am taking steroids for Polymyalgia Rheumatica and since taking them, told that I am pre diabetic. I joined the Fast 800 Mediterranean diet during the pandemic and went from 66kg ( was 60kg prior to steroids) and lost weight - today and most days I weigh 60.2 kg. I walk a lot , don't sleep well and only eat berries as part of the diet. Prior to it I was eating lots of fruit. I occasionally have dark rye sour dough bread as toast. Eat two eggs most days and I am never hungry. I don't eat potatoes, rice or pasta. Will I ever lose the prediabetic label?

You would if your HbA1C is below 42mmol/mol for two consecutive tests without any diabetic medication, I think. Prediabetic 42-47mmol/l, 48mmol/mol and above diabetic.
Will you be taking steroids long term as they do often increase blood glucose which returns to normal when you stop taking them.

I have been taking them for over 2 years and with Polymyalgia, I manage to reduce them slowly and then it flares up again so currently back up to 10mg per day. I would love to stop taking them including all the rest of the drugs that go with them.

I found losing weight reversed my diabetes.
I did a low fat diet, then the shake based Newcastle diet.
Now eating a normal Mediterranean style diet.
(And the odd McDonald's)

Don't despair, wife was insame situation 4 years ago, joined local Slimming World group then lost 5 stone in total, all bloods since have been normal so condition can be reversed with weight loss. Good luck.

I am trying to reduce them as was told that it is probably the steroids that have caused the problem. Had reduced well but because of a flare up of the Polymyalgia, my GP has told me to increase back to 10 mg again! can't win it seems.
