I am going to try to prevent, and reverse, my slide towards Type 2 diabetes. I have been impressed, in the past, with Dr Michael Mosley's programmes on TV about health. Just been told I am pre-diabetic by my GP. So I want to take control and fight this, instead of taking tablets. This means altering the way I eat, and taking regular exercise.

I bought Dr Mosley's book "The 8-week blood sugar diet" which I have just been reading; I am going to try this. After all, it's only 8 weeks!

However, I am gong to have to do this alone - unless there is someone out there who wants to try it with me? Or else someone who wants mutual e-mail support to try and fight this illness? In the words of the song "it's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me" Either that or lie there feeling sorry for myself and getting sicker.

Hi Vicky, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's not something I need to try myself, as it wouldn't actually do much for me as I am Type 1. However, we do have members who have tried this and found some success with it - I hope you do also 🙂 It would be worth understanding a bit more about what diabetes is, so I'd suggest reading the excellent Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter 🙂 Whilst 8 weeks may help you to turn things around, a better understanding of diabetes will help you maintain things and make good choices long-term, which is what is required. A diet which is healthy for people with diabetes is healthy for everyone, so there is no reason to feel deprived or restricted, it's about discovering what works well for you and what you need to avoid 🙂

Let us know if you have any questions and we will try our best to help! 🙂

Hi Vicky

Like you I am also pre-diabetic. I was diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance 5 years ago. I was terrified (still am if truth be known!). I joined this fabulous support group, lost 3 stones and got my BS into the normal range. I was elated. I couldn't have done it without the good people on this forum. But...then life got in the way. I lost my mum, had a couple of health scares and gradually piled the weight back on! And here I am again, feeling deflated, unhealthy and a bit scared (and ashamed too that I have returned to this point). However, I have started to check in on here more regularly, have joined Slimming World and am determined to get this weight back off and and my health back on track. The people on here are lovely, supportive, informed and non judgmental. I have also bought the 8 week blood sugar diet by Michael Moseley and am toying with the idea of giving it a go. I will happily buddy up with you if you want to PM me. I too would love to join ranks with someone in the same boat!

Good luck to you. Maybe we can do this together?

Katie

Hi VIcky
It's good to hear from someone with such a positive attitude who's determined to heed this wake up call. I was diagnosed T2 before I did the 8 week diet...so you're already ahead of the game. I can't be doing with meal replacement shakes so I used real food...simply counting every calorie I put in my mouth After the 8 week 'kick start' I adopted a low carb/full fat lifestyle and it has certainly paid dividends. I'm off the diabetic register and in good shape. I note that you have a buddy already which will certainly encourage you both. If there's anything I can do to support you just drop me a line.

Guys, this is a marathon, a good diet with healthy carbohydrate options will be easy to sustain and keep you in the safe zone for longer than eight weeks. You will see improvements with your blood sugar almost as quickly and become healthier

Welcome to the Forum /Vicky. You will find the help and support on here a godsend.

I was told I was close to pre-diabetic in April this year. I immediately found this Forum and, following advice, I cut my carbs. My GP had told me to cut my fresh fruit consumption as I had been having about 6-7 pieces a day including bananas and pineapple. Also I ate quite a lot of dried fruit, including dates before I went to bed (horror of horrors). I ate muesli for breakfast and sandwiches at lunch, potatoes with meals in the evening, pasta, the lot. There was me thinking my diet was healthy. I stopped all this and cut my fruit to 1, 2 or max 3 per day and cut out bananas and pineapple.

Test was re-taken in July and hba1c had gone up slightly and I was then pre-diabetic. I was devastated. I was not overweight in the first place and, by now, I was underweight (still am) as I had lost weight through cutting the carbs.

The Lifestyle Nurse told me nothing else was a problem when they did the complete lifestyle check and I was sent on a Diabetes Prevention Programme which I am halfway through. At my first meeting with the Facilitator in September she took another hba1c and it had gone back to normal readings. However, she said to still go on the course as they would want to continue to monitor me due to the previous impaired glucose tolerance.

I am now trying to put on some weight by upping protein within reason and fat within reason. I cannot obviously go mad with bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, chocolate, biscuits etc.

I felt exactly the same as you in that I want to try to prevent this or delay it. Even if the worst comes to the worst and I don't stay within normal limits and do eventually end up diabetic it is best I get used to keeping my diet under control as it then becomes even more important.

This Forum is invaluable and you will get loads of help. Good luck.
