Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
HI FOLK
I have recently had a comupance on my huge sweet eating habit( haribo lots !!l)
I'm 55, size 12 ,no family history of diabetes
But random Hba1c was 42
Question is , how much will stopping sweets and severely restricting sweet carbs, bread ,Pasta,etc reduce my Hba1c
I don't need to loose much weight as in bmi normal

Hi @gracieb welcome to the forum. There's some information here about prediabetes which might be of interest.
If you cut back on your sweets and cut back a little on your carbs, you should be able to reduce your HbA1c. I don't know by how much, but I'm diabetic and got my HbA1c from 80 in October to 42 last month, so it's possible to reduce it, though I did go on a massive diet, so that probably helped!

If you are just at the bottom end of prediabetes then some moderation in the higher carb foods, cakes, biscuits, potatoes, rice, pasta and sweets and sugary drinks should be sufficient to reduce your level to the normal range in jig quick time. Look upon a positive thing to be given an opportunity to tackle it now before it goes up further.

Sorry to hear that you’ve had a slightly increased HbA1c result.

Try not to be too disheartened. Many people on the forum later reflect that their ’wake up call’ became a catalyst which prompted them to finally make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years.

Often you don’t realise how weary, worn down and lethargic you may have been feeling. Erratic and elevated blood glucose levels can be exhausting and are linked with low mood, but this may have come on quite gradually. Making a few positive changes can give you more energy, a clearer mind, and a brighter outlook.

As you are at the lower end of the ‘at risk’ scale, there is a good chance that making some changes to your menu by reducing your intake of sweet and sugary things to just occasional treats, and cutting back on portion sizes of starchy carbs (eg greek yoghurt and berries with a sprinkle of granola rather than a whole bowl of cereal) will help your metabolism cope better.
