At risk of diabetes
Hi all I had been told I was borderline diabetic so got to work on my diet which put me into remission. I’ve just had COVID and it pushed my blood sugar through the roof getting as high as 20. I have now got it back to 5.5 but do need to lose some weight . Before lockdown I got plenty of exercise playing golf 3 times a week and walk dogs 2/3 miles a day as well as an active job.
However I do like tasty food so some great recipes from you guys in the know would be greatly appreciated.
thanks all regards Richard Rochford

Hi Richard, glad to hear you've managed to get your blood glucose levels down after them spiking due to Covid.

As Josh mentioned I can provide you with support and information regarding increasing your physical activity, such as ways to be active at home. So do send me a message if this would be helpful.

Welcome to the forum @Richtkd68

Sorry to hear that Covid played such havoc with your BG levels - glad you’ve managed to get things back on a fairly even keel since.

What sorts of tasty foods do you enjoy?

As you have been told you are at risk of developing diabetes, it is mainly going to be the carbohydrates in your diet (all carbohydrates, not just sweet and sugary things) that are raising your BG levels - though as you have discovered, illness, some medications and things like stress can all contribute too!

Our bodies break down carbs and sugars into glucose very efficiently, so while it can be tempting to think that sweet things are the problem, most of the potential BG rise from something like jam on toast would come from the slice of bread because that is where the majority of carbs are found.

Many new members also find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu.

Good luck and let us know how you get on 🙂

Depends how much jam you choose to put on the toast Mike you and I may find we enjoy a scrape, cos it's jam and hence a bit risky maybe ...... but if I only put that much on OH's slice, he'd have a right moan about it and say eg 'Oy Madam! I haven't got diabetes!' - as it is, his 'scrape' of anything for me when he makes whatever it is, is far thicker than mine so then I get other whinges cos he does things differently and his way is always best of course!

(See, I never trained him, cos we got together late in life when someone else obviously hadn't had the stamina to argue about it - whereas the one I'd trained properly myself, someone else now has the benefit of!)

Well the way I think about it... a standard teaspoon’s worth is generally about what... 5g? And that would be a LOT of jam for a slice of toast IMO. And the jam I make for home is only ever half and half berries and sugar, so I would reckon 3g CHO ish? vs 12-18g for the toast?
