At risk of diabetes
Hi, I was recently informed that my hba1c reading was 43 which puts me at risk of developing diabetes. I am not overweight and as for being active I walk 10+ miles a day as a Postie and weight train 3-4 days a week. I already have a healthy diet so I am struggling as to what changes I can make. I need to consume enough calories to have the energy to get through the day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Many people who find themselves in you situation feel they have a healthy diet but that is not necessarily the case if their body has problems coping with carbohydrates so it is important to reduce those in your diet and replace with protein and healthy fats together with vegetables and salads and fruit like berries.
You are only just in the at risk zone so some modest changes should be sufficient.
Reducing portions of foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, bread, pastry, and cutting out cakes, biscuits, sugary drinks including fruit juice.
Portion control of high carb foods is important.

Thank you for your reply and I will have a look at the information on the link. I do not eat any cakes, biscuits etc or sugary drinks, juices. The small amounts of pasta and rice are all wholemeal varieties and I eat very few potatoes. My only cereal is porridge. Thanks again.

Have had a look at that website. Definitely going to run that off and use it as a guide.

Sounds like you’ve already made some of the changes that might be the obvious ‘quick wins’ for people who arrive here being told they are at risk of diabetes. And you sound like you are fit and active too.

Were you experiencing any symptoms? Or was this picked up through a routine check-up?

There are other forms of diabetes that can come on later in life from other causes, which might have a genetic or autoimmune root. Was it primarily your are that meant they suspected you were at risk of T2?
 
I had no obvious symptoms and it was picked up after I had some routine blood tests. I am not sure of any family history as I am not in contact with any family members.
