Hi everyone I’m new here! I’m a 19 year old female And I need to share what’s been going on with me this past few months.
So, it all started almost 4 months ago where I would urinate way to much, that I would avoid drinking any liquids at university because I don’t want to keep needing to urinate, but I would still need to go urinate almost every 3 hours which is odd. A month later I started getting so thirsty all the time that I about drink a gallon of water a day and urinate every 15 minutes, which is also odd because I’ve never been someone who drinks water, I would even not drink more than a sip a day and still not feel thirsty, so this was just a sudden extreme thirst, another symptom I was having was dry and burning eyes especially a few hours after eating, and I would get so sleepy in the middle of the day, so lethargic and tired. After reading about T1D I thought it was it at first but what threw me off was (weight loss) because I wasn’t losing weight but I wasn’t gaining any either even though I’m eating way more that before ( note: my weight is 46 kg ) and I have little hormones imbalances which I was told that I would gain so much weight fast if I eat more.
I was scared to tell my mom and she wouldn’t believe my symptoms so I told her that I might have a UTI so I did a urine test two weeks ago to see if I had glucose in my urine and there was none so again that through me off ! Yet I’m still a little worried as my symptoms are still there
Could this be T1D ? Or is it all in my head

@Nadine sorry to read of your recent problems.
We are not doctors so cannot (and should not) diagnose.
I strongly recommend that you make an appointment to see a doctor.

Whilst I would not wish diabetes on my worst enemy, it is not an end to your life. Treatment has greatly improved over the time I have had Type 1 and continues to improve.
It has not stopped many of us living full, adventurous lives.

Please arrange to see a doctor as soon as possible.
Untreated diabetes can be very bad.

I know you guys are not doctors but I’m worried and I’m just trying to get an idea about these symptoms and if they could be diabetes, and since my urine test came back negative for glucose and I don’t know if it’s possible to have T1D
Thank yooou again

Hi. I understand your concerns, as I've been a worrier all my life and imagined all sorts of things. Dr Google has a lot to answer for. But in your case, with your symptoms, I would go and see someone and ask for a blood test as soon as possible. Your University should have a medical centre, or ask to see your GP - not fobbed off with a phone call. Emphasise the thirst, urination and tiredness - any medical person worth their salt will want to check for diabetes. They will want to do a finger prick test (current glucose level), and hopefully a blood test called HbA1c (average glucose over 3 months). Last resort in these difficult times, go to A&E. Hopefully it is not, but will give you peace of mind. If it is diabetes, the sooner you start treatment the better, and you will get lots of help here.

You may have diabetes but you may have something else.
Please please please make an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible so that whatever the cause of your symptoms can be treated, you can start feeling better and you can stop worrying.

I agree with everyone else - talk to a doctor and get a blood test if only for your peace of mind.

Based on your symptoms I would think your GP would want you to have a blood test. If not, or if you are struggling to talk to a GP and can afford it, then you can get the blood test done privately.

Wishing you all the best and feel free to let us know how it goes.

Hi and welcome. As I said in the other thread you posted on, I started my enquiry about almost identical symptoms via the GP online referral system "Ask my GP" I think there are other similar systems at different surgeries. I don't know if your surgery does that but it was extremely quick and efficient. I submitted my enquiry with details of my symptoms and I also included that I thought it might be diabetes. I got a reply back the next day to say that I had been scheduled a blood test the next day and 2 days later I was diagnosed. It really was very easy and straightforward.
The important thing is that you get checked out because if it is diabetes, it could suddenly become a lot worse and land you in hospital. Please get some medical advice and tests.

Hi @Nadia249 🙂 Those symptoms could be a lot of things, and only a doctor could check to see what’s causing them. The fact you haven’t lost weight makes me think it’s something other than Type 1 because the weight loss was extremely noticeable for me.

As an aside, I don’t think urinating every three hours is excessive. That sounds pretty common to me.

Please do see your Doctor as they can very simply rule out Type 1, and also check for other issues too.

If you struggle to get an appointment quickly with your GP then asking at a pharmacy to do a finger pricks will be a quick option and can help decide if you need to be seen urgently. Hope you can see your GP quickly though.

Thank you! It does take time to get an appointment quickly :/

What are the “little hormonal imbalances” @Nadia249 if you don’t mind me asking? Could those be involved?

Reading your opening post again, I see that you say the thirst and frequent urination (ie every 15 mins) happened 3 months ago. It would be likely you’d be pretty ill by now if you did have Type 1. You’d also probably have lost a significant amount of weight, and have glucose in your urine.

Some hormonal problems can cause excessive urination. There are other problems too that can cause your symptoms. Even cystitis or irritable bladder can cause similar symptoms. Rather than focussing on diabetes, I think it would be sensible to get a general check over at your GP surgery. You said earlier that you’re worried your mum won’t believe you. Don’t tell her you think you have diabetes, maybe just tell her that you’re not feeling well and list two or three of the symptoms?

Have you got an appointment yet? Remember you can ask to speak to a nurse. You don’t have to wait to see a doctor. They could give advice and run any basic tests needed. While visiting a pharmacy to have your blood glucose checked is quick and easy, it’s not going to help discover what the issue is if, as seems possible, it’s not Type 1.

@Inka I have a very high LH to FSH ratio which is why I said the doctors told me losing weight would so hard for me and gaining would be so fast.
I’m also starting to think that this is not T1D as you said I’d probably be very sick by now which I’m really not!. I’ll schedule an appointment to see what’s going on as my symptoms are really bothering me, and I’ve been very fatigued, lethargic and sleepy all the time because I’m not really sleeping well because I’m just drinking water and peeing during the night maybe. But it can also be related to my other diagnoses ( POTS, IBS ). Thank you tho!
I hope I know what’s happening asap

@Nadia249 I hope you find an answer quickly too. It’s really not nice feeling unwell, and not knowing why makes it worse. As you have other conditions already, do push for an answer. Even if, say, it’s connected with the POTS, it might be something that’s easily improved.

I hope you find out what’s causing this and are feeling more yourself soon. Best wishes 🙂
