Hi all

I am having a pre assessment for the pump on the 20th. Wondering has anyone ever been turned down for the pump after their assessment? Or can offer any advice for the assessment

I was turned down the first time but it was many years ago when the pumps were less available and before the changes in the NICe guidelines.

These are things that could help you make your case for having a pump.
Are you clear why you want a pump? These are things that I found when I switched:
  • Night hypos were reduced as I am able to match my basal insulin to my needs hour by hour throughout the day rather than adjusting one/two basal injections each day.
  • Making adjustments for exercise is easier as the basal is delivered hour by hour and I can turn it down a couple of hours before I start exercise, as well as making changes to bolus insulin as necessary
  • Bolus insulin can be delivered in different ways: all up front, extended over a period of time of your choice or a mix of these. This enabled me to manage a greater variety of foods mor easily
  • You could do your research about each of the pumps that are on offer at your trust. There are patch or tubed pumps, ones that can be looped with sensors or ones that can’t, they come in different sizes.
If you are refused a pump ask them why. I did this then spent 6 months gathering data and information to address each of their concerns and was given the okay for a pump at the following meeting.

Pumps take a bit of getting used to. They require quite a bit of work at the start, but I know for me it was a game changer. I started a pump before sensors were available and the sensors have very much increased the effectiveness of the pumps. I am now using a closed loop system and for me that has given my life back.

Ps
Welcome to the forum.
If you feel like doing so (and I have not missed it elsewhere in the newbies section) tell us a bit more about your diabetes.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I get the dawn phenomenon which sets me off everyday on a bad start, I find it takes ages to correct this. My nurse said this is the main reason I should get the pump as it would help me massively. I do find I hypo thought the night more than I would during the day,.so this would help me also I feel.

I completed the DAFNE course a few years back and was put on the pump list after this but it has taken 3 years for the assessment appointment to come though so fingers crossed

It sounds like they are already wanting you to have a pump, so quite unlikely that they will reject your assessment. Do you know what choices are available? There is loads of experience of the different options to tap into on here. Just ask.

Sue I am guessing you intended that "likely" I highlighted above should read "unlikely"
