Hello all

Have a very painful tooth, which made me go to the Dentist yesterday, the first time (I must admit) for many years, I know very naughty! Anyway Dentist said he thought the Nerve was either dead or dying but wasnt going to do any work until I had a course of Antibiotics. Was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if so what was the treatment, how much did it cost, and what was the outcome?

Thanks

Shirl

Hi Shirl, very sorry to hear about your tooth :( I have had this very same thing on a couple of occasions. The dentist tried the antibiotics to see if it would clear up the infection but in my case, unfortunately, it didn't. The first time I had a root canal done, where they take out all the dead tissue from inside the tooth and fill it. On the second occasion - with the same tooth! - the tooth had to be removed. A root canal is more expensive than having a tooth removed - it can be in the region of ?200-400 for root canal (I think - mine was a long time ago!), or around ?80 for a tooth removal (again, just based on my experience). The root canal lasted me for about 10 years.

I hope the antibiotics work for you and then perhaps it will just be a simple filling that is required. 🙂

Thanks Northerner,

Kind of knew it would be expensive but, ouch, think that might hurt more than the tooth! I guess it serves me right for not going to the dentist for a long time :( not sure I can afford root canal work so may just have it out, although he did say it may not be that easy to take out, it seems that I may be between the devil and the deep blue sea huh?

I was exactly the same as you shirl - hadn't been to the dentist for 10 years but the pain was so bad I had to. If the tooth can be saved it's worth doing. I eventually had mine removed because in the years since the root canal was done various bits had broken off it and it was practically all filling at the end!

One thing to bear in mind is to try and keep good blood sugar levels as this will help the antibiotics do their work.

Hi shirl as a fellow sufferer at the moment i understand your pain!! I have just finished my course of antibiotics this morning and am awaiting an appointment at the dentist to see what can be done about it....i think root canal work and extractions are around ?47 but if bridges and crowns are needed or wanted your looking at about 200+ per appointment! i need 3 done but am going to try to get referred to the hospital so it can all be done in one go!

i still think diabetics should be entitled to free dental treatment 😡

good luck with the antibiotics and hope you get the treatment you need

Ah, my original root canal was done privately, so my ?200-400 is obviously way above an NHS price!! 😱

Aw thank you, is so painful :( can't eat or drink on right side of mouth. You must be in a lot of pain 😱 have the anti-biots done any good? I do feel for you, hopefully they can sort you out soon too. An I couldn't agree more about the free dental treatment, maybe one day . . . . . . . 🙄 won't hold me breath tho!

I think that when the NHS first started up all dental treatment was free, but it was quickly realised that it couldn't be supported financially as there was such a high demand, which is why they introduced charges (still subsidised though!).

Shirl how is tooth feeling today? im sick of rubbing colgate stuff on mine and pray for the day it falls out my left side of mouth is tired now lol x

Yer it was painful, reduced me to tears whilst at work thats why i had to make an emergency appointment that day! the other 2 teeth arent painful....yet but thats coz i put some temp fillings in i think they are dead to be honest i need em all pulled out! well having finished the antibiotics i have no pain in the tooth that was causing problems so the aim is to make the appointment asap! find out what needs doing and consider all the options!

I hope your tooth is less painful for you soon, the antibiotics should kick in and do their job 🙂 x
