Wondering if anyone has diabetes with polymyalgia rheumatic just been diagnosed with both . Now started taking steriods . Any advice or tips from anyone would be very helpful feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all . I've seem to have aged overnight missing my energy and finding it hard to be positive .

How have you been advised to manage your diabetes as steroids are well known for causing increase in blood glucose.
It is going to be important that you watch your carbohydrate intake and having a home blood glucose monitor would help you identify foods which you can tolerate or those which push up your blood glucose.
There are people here who have experience of taking steroids so hopefully they will be able to offer some words of wisdom.

Been advised by doc to monitor. Seeing diabetic nurse next week. I'm suppose to be on these steroids for 2 weeks we'll the doc sees my consultant about tablets that work like steroids but are better for diabetics?..

Hello @cornwall,
steroids will raise your blood sugars quite high, so if you are just taking Metformin your best bet would be to lower your carbohydrate intake as much as possible whilst on them.

What part of Cornwall are you in?

PMR is an autoimmune condition. My sister has it and she is on long term steroids and methotrexate. Thankfully we have shared the autoimmune conditions in our family and I was probably more fortunate and got diabetes.

Have they checked that your diabetes is not also autoimmune ie Type 1 rather than Type 2?

Unfortunately many doctors just assume you are Type 2 if you are over a certain age and/or carrying a bit too much weight. Many are even still under the misunderstanding that Type 1 only exhibits in children and young adults so if you are a mature adult then they assume you can't have Type 1 so therefore must have type 2. Many don't even know that there are other types of diabetes beyond Type 1 and Type 2.

In your position, I would be querying your diabetes type, particularly if your levels are going up quite high and ask to either be referred to a specialist at the diabetes clinic or ask for Type 1 testing.... GAD antibody and C-peptide tests.
