Just received a letter referring me to a podiatry clinic. Wasn't expecting that as I had my feet checked by nursey last month and my pulses were OK with no signs of neuropathy on the tuning fork test. Any idea what this is all about?

Sounds like they did all the usual tests Cliff. I had nursey do my tests the first time but my DSN recommended I register with the podiatry service so I went there as well. They only did the same tests, but maybe they are more expert at making the assessment than the nurse? I didn't have any problems that meant I needed to see them, and they said unless I developed problems I would be able to see the practice nurse in future! Perhpas it gives them a baseline for the future?

Maybe you are deemed more high risk and they want a podiatrist to make an assessment. They are going to have more expertise than a nurse so I would take up the appointment.

You need to see one I would guess as Nursey isn't the expert! I'm seeing one in 2 weeks, hopefully my big toes will come back to life by then! Nothing to worry about Cliff, at least you'll have somewhere to go if you do develope any slight issues.

I have never had my feet checked, when should you get them checked?

should get them checked yearly, so that any problems can be picked up. if there is higher risk of problems then they might be checked more regulary.

Having now spoken to my own GP practice this morning and the GP practice that hosts the podiatry clinic, I think I've got to the bottom of this one.

There is an element of duplication here but both practices are happy with that - although I was assessed as 'low risk' on the basis of what nursey did last month, if I go and have it all done again, I get on the podiatry clinic's register and will have more immediate access to specialist advice if any problems arise in the future.

Scotty - I was also diagnosed in October so I guess we've been in the system the same length of time. Here's how it worked for me.

Once the diagnosis was confirmed, I was added to the practice's diabetic register which is run by one of the nurses. Once on the register, a whole number of automatic referrals kick in. I'm told I will get automatic referrals for an annual check with the nurse (had my first one), annual podiatry check (arranged for next month), annual retinopathy check (still waiting for this), referral to a dietician (still waiting for this), and self-management education courses (tomorrow night - will be reporting on this in a separate thread). I also enquired about how often the Dr would want to see me for blood tests and blood test reviews and was told that that largely depends on your HbA1c, every 3 months if struggling for good control, to every 12 months where control is good.

Hope this helps.

I think that's basically what happened in my case Cliff. The Podiatry service said that if they hadn't heard from me for 18 months then I would revery to my GP and would have to re-register with them. I haven't been checked since last April, so am going to make an appointment with them to see them soon.
