Sorry I haven't posted for a while but I do look in every day to see how everyone is doing.

I'd like to tell you about my visit to my NHS podiatrist yesterday. After sorting out some hard skin I asked her if they were really not allowed to cut toe nails and she said they weren't allowed. Anyway, she is a very nice lady and asked me if I would like mine cutting so of course I said yes. She made an excellent job of them, which I couldn't do myself. I asked her if I could make an appointment next Feb. before my review and she said I could try but there are some huge changes going to happen in October within the NHS and she didn't know yet what they were. It might be a case of being referred again by my GP which takes months. We shall have to wait and see.
BUT I have a miserable ending to my visit - as I was getting off the couch I must have twisted somehow and now am in agony with a back/hip pain. I can walk about with care but its not comfortable to sit down. If anyone has any tips I would be most grateful.
Best wishes to all.
Thelma

Hi Thelma, good news about the toenail clipping, but very sorry to hear that you have injured yourself. I'm afraid I don't have any words of wisdom to help you, but I hope that you feel much better soon.

Thanks for the replies, at least 1 reply. Thanks Northerner.

Is the reason they can't cut toenails down to the treatment being free on the NHS? My husband was suffering with an ingrowing toenail, made a private appointment with the podiatrist, paid ?25 and had a full exam and pedicure. He says it was the best ?25 he has ever spent. I know this doesn't compare with a diabetic who needs regular checks, but why will they cut toenails if you are prepared to pay? Also, many people can't afford to pay (we couldn't as a regular thing)! It doesn't seem right, particularly given that not cutting nails properly can lead to all sorts of complications!

Sorry to hear about the back problem. I can sympathise as I have just returned from holiday and sleeping on the worst bed I have ever slept on! The result is sciatica in my left leg, which is painful when I walk. Taking ibuprofen helps to ease the discomfort and fortunately it is improving. My husband had a fall around 3 months ago and has been troubled with pain down his left side, which the doctor thinks is a trapped nerve in his spine. He has been referred for an MRI scan to confirm this. He has suffered pain for nearly 3 months which is miserable for him as very little has helped with the discomfort. He has been prescribed some pain relief for nerve pain by the doctor, which doesn't seem to work either!

Rest and ibuprofen are the best things to try, but if things don't improve, then you may need to visit your GP.

Hope things improve soon and I sympathise with the toe nail issue. It simply doesn't seem right to me!

Hi Katie,
I hope both you and your husband are improving. There's nothing worse than being in pain all the time.
As to toenails, we shall just have to wait and see what is going to happen in October when the NHS are supposed to be making big changes.
Take care.
