A GRANDAD is running a half marathon to fund research into a cure after his granddaughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Plymouth City Council worker Phil Bees, 57, is taking on the Great North Run in Newcastle on September 7, following three-year-old Paige Bees’ diagnosis with the condition last October.

Paige was taken to the doctor by her parents, Katie and Andrew, after they noticed she was very thirsty and needed to wee a lot, especially at night.

“Fortunately the doctor spotted that Paige had some of the classic symptoms of type 1 diabetes straight away and she was sent immediately to hospital,” said Phil, from Glenholt.
