Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello All,
My name is Samantha and I'm 29. Just before Christmas I was diagnosed with Type 1 and am fed up already! Was doing real well before Christmas eating healthy, feeling great but went mad over the xmas period stuffing my face and drinking plenty and have now reached an all time low. My recent blood test was rubbish and my cholesterol was high (didn't think you got problems with that till you were older?). I wake up early every morning now(which is not good as it would be nice to have at least one lie in a week) feeling like my bladder is gonna burst and back aching how can I make this go away? My tummy aches all the time from the injections and feel about a 100 years old. I love sweets and chocolate and I smoke and am really struggling to give up any of them! Have spent 29 years doing what I want and am cross I have to inject every time I want to put food in my mouth. Well rant over ha ha any advice will be well recieved. Thanks

Hi Samantha,

We all get fed up from time to time but beng diagnosed before Christmas must be truely awful. We all tend to find Christmas harder but we do let ourselves go. Mine was filled with much drinking and merry making. Are you talking about your latest HbA1c when you refer to your latest blood test? I think it's fair to say that as a rule, the longer you've had diabetes more trouble can catch up with you. What I'd say is that you should work on giving up the cigarettes and sweets one by one. Don't try and do it all at once. I've tried that in my fourteen years with type one and it hasn't really worked. My first term at univeristy showed that. It made my cholesterol rocket and I had bad bloods for the majority of it.

Feel free to ask whatever you want, there is a huge pool of knowledge here. You'll learn something new about diabetes on pretty much every day.

Thanks Tom,
Think your right about not doing it all at once seems so overwhelming! I think I have a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other unfortunatley I listen to the red fellow slightly more than I should! Yes HbA1c was the blood result that was bad ( they could call it something better than that surely whats with all the upper lower case ha ha). Thanks again.

Yeah, same situation for me. The little red fellow has a greater word than the one in white. HbA1c, well, I think I prefer that to it's other name - glycosylated haemaglobin! Bit of a mouthful! If you want to add me on facebook or MSN you're more than welcome to. Just send me a private message.

hey Samantha, I'm a Sam too :D all the best people are called Samantha it seems :D

welcome to the forum, and feel free to ask any questions

Hi Samantha welcome to the forum.

Hi Samantha, that's a really BAD time to get diagnosed, I found out I had T1 on Easter Monday and had a cupboard full of Easter eggs, which I found a bit rough too! So I can sympathise with you finding things really tough and being angry about what's changed. The only thing I can say is it gets better with time, I'm three years down the line now.

Also, I didn't have to totally give up sweets and cakes and things, which at first I thought I would. What insulins are you on? If you take basal and bolus insulins then you can learn to count carbohydrates vary your bolus to cover what you want to eat, then you can be a lot more flexible with meal times and contents. Have a nosey round the recipes section and see if you can find some tasty but healthier suggestions for snacks.

My top tip would be to find out about the different insulins avalable, and go to any courses that are available at your diabetes clinic, e.g. DAFNE or a similar carb-counting course, so that you can control your blood sugars better and not end up desperate to wee every morning!

Hope things get better for you, feel free to ask lots of questions or have a rant!
