I'm sorry if this shouldn't be here, so please please don't scorn me if its wrong. I was only diagnosed with diabetes a year ago but my sugar levels were okay until this week where they have gone from 11-13.

I've been getting a very numb thigh and I've been reading it may be diabetes. Only my neighbor had something similar with diabetes and had his foot cut off. Please help me, Im only 21 and scared. :(

Hi Jess and a warm welcome to the forum, dont worry you have posted in the wrong place. Please try not to overly worry I know its easier said then do, the best thing you can do is to get an appointment with your GP saves you worrying yourself silly x,your freinds case is diffirent to yours and if things are picked up and a diagnosis is given as to why your thigh is tingling theres no reason why you will be losing any limbs. Is they any reason in particular that your levels have been 11-13 this week? .

hi jess. welcome 🙂

there's no reason why you should end up like your neighbour unless you have a long history of complications or have not been doing anything to control your BGs.

If your levels have suddenly gone up, it may be that you have some sort of infection (perhaps a reaction to an insect bite ?) which is causing your numb thigh. Any infection, illness or stress will raise your BGs temporarily.

As steff says, contact your GP or NHS Direct for advice about it. If you think it's an emergency, you could go to your nearest A&E.🙂

In the meantime, are you on any meds at all ?

Rob

Hi lately I have felt under the weather but I have put it down to stress and pressure from college and anxiety. Maybe I have ate a little more junk food because I was used to comfort eating.

Im sorry I posted here, I was desperately trying to find a place to post as I didnt wanna contact a GP incase it's something small and minor.

The whole area of my thigh is numb and right now I take 40mg of Zicron but they want me to use insulin because sometimes my sugar goes 3-4 x

sorry i made a mistake in my post hun, i meant to say have NOT posted in the wrong place, sorry about the misunderstanding...
Your GP will still prefer you to mention it though becauce if its scaring you then it needs looking into x

I'm sure your GP wouldn't think you were being silly and would rather you saw him than stayed at home worrying. I would make that appointment.

And by the way, I've had neuropathy (which is possibly what your neighbour has) for several years and it certainly didn't come on suddenly and I still have both my legs!:D

Jess - you sound like the numbness is making you really anxious. Is there anyone with you who you can talk to ?

I'm not sure if you regret posting in the general messageboard area and are responding to Steff's comment which she has now corrected or your sorry that you posted at all.

If its the former don't worry about whether you post in the right place or not. If you get it wrong it will mysteriously move to the right place.

If its the latter then please give us a chance - even if no one can answer this specific question people will be able to answer others.

If your numbness won't go away I would advise seeking a medical person out. They won't be upset or angry with you and they won't feel like you are wasting your time.

You could try a walk in centre if you don't want to wait till you can get an appointment.

I have told my parents but they tell me I'll have my leg cut off, it doesn't help my situation (So imagine a year of this constant hypocondriact drama..). They told me to walk abit so I've been wandering around the house. I feel no pain or any weakness, just if I touch my thigh I know its really numb.

I dont know if this helps but I've had pain on m y back behind my ribs for a few weeks and a weird non itchy painless rash on my chest and inner arms.

Thank you for your support everyone. I feel really secure here. Im anxious yes but no doctors..only A&E. :( xxx

Hi Jess, welcome to the forum 🙂 As the others have said, it is highly unlikely that a serious problem like neuropathy would develop so quickly. You should, however, see your doctor. He will know all your medical history and be able to give a proper diagnosis and treatment if necessary. You should never be afraid of going to your doctor because you are worried it may turn out to be something minor - she would much rather you saw her at the earliest signs of something worrying you than later as things are much easier to treat if treatment is needed. The very fact that you are worried about it means you need a proper explanation of what it is if only to put your mind at ease and stop you being stressed! Stress can raise blood sugar levels and if you have been under the weather too then it could be a combination of these that is giving you higher than normal readings. As long as they are not constantly in double figures, you will not come to any harm from a few days.

Please make an appointment and let us know how things go. You could also contact NHS Direct who may be able to put your mind at ease straight away or tell you what you need to do. Their number is 0845 4647.

There may be a walk in centre nearby where you could talk to a triage nurse - would you find that OK ?

Hi they have been in double figures for quite a few days yes, but I think its from stress and anxiety and feeling ill. Im still trying to manage them so sometimes they are all over the place. I know 11 is bad, but is it -okay- if I am unwell and very stressed out?

My numbers will go into double figures if stressed or unwell. When are you measuring them? Before or after eating? What levels do you wake up with in the morning? The waking one is a good indicator of how you are doing overall as you won;t have eaten anything for a few hours so food won't be playing a part 🙂

I just had a sandwich and right now they are 11. I'm so happy you're all supportive here. I have felt so alone since I was diagnosed. For a long time I didn't manage my sugars because I had to nurse my grandad when he had cancer, and I constantly get told I'll die from parents if my sugars are 11-13. It's a huge struggle.

Im hoping the feeling in my thigh will return. Im not really that active (From anxiety I fear going out and left me with no motivation and I know exercise is great for diabetes. I am a little over weight too, at least I can be honest here x)

Jess please make an appointment with your GP and tell him/her what you have told us about being constantly told you will die. Its no wonder you are feeling anxious. Your GP could refer you to a community Diabetes specialist nurse who could help support you or give you some advice on handling the situation.
You could try calling the Diabetes UK Careline. Take a look at this link. Unfortunately its closed for the weekend but you could call Monday.

If you are 11 after eating, and given how you feel generally, I wouldn't say 11 was too much to worry about. Your parents sound as though they are trying to make sure that you are aware of the dangers of constantly high levels, but from what you say it seems to me that perhaps this is making you overanxious and not really helping you to deal with your diabetes. If you can learn to understand it then it is something that you can manage well and hugely reduce the risks of anything going wrong. I would suggest having a look in our 'Useful Links' thread - there are some great links in there to information that will help you get a more balanced understanding of diabetes. Especially good is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - you might be able to find a copy in your local library, or it is just a few pounds and money well spent! 🙂

Please ask us anything that you are not sure of, there are lots of knowledgeable, experienced and friendly people here who will be happy to help!

Gosh I love you all very much for helping me here. I will see my GP on Monday morning & come back and tell you how it went! Thank you. For now I shall watch Lost all day and stop worrying 😛 x

Insist on seeing the doc on Monday Hun even if the receptionist is a dragon, make sure u phone first thing....does he also know about your anxiety and going out? As there's so much in the way of meds u can take fir anxiety which would then mean u will get back some get up and go, then be able to get out for some walks, lose weight and get on top of the diabetes... Life is too short to sit shut away at home ( been there done it got the tshirt) x

Hi Jess, Welcome - and please don't worry about sounding over-anxious on here: I bet there's not one of us who can honestly say they haven't really worried about things since their diagnosis, whether that was yesterday or many years ago. I find that if I wake up at three o'clock in the morning, that's when I get hyper-worried about things (most of which never happen to me, by the way !). 😱

Please get proper medical advice as soon as possible and come back and tell us how things are with you then. Until then enjoy being "Lost" !

Kind regards,
