Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I dream of being a mum one day. Anyone have any tips. I have heard that its harder for diabetics to get pregnant. Any advise is greatly appreciated

Hi, I'm type 2 and had a successful pregnancy. I have a lovely little 4 year old who took 4 months to conceive and am starting to prep ready to try for number 2. Heres my experience in case its helps. Let your diabetes nurse know when you are ready as you need to get your levels down to recommended preconception levels. This includes pre and post meal targets. You also need to take folic acid 3 months in advance but much higher levels than normally recommended for non diabetics so they need to be prescribed by your GP.

I was already on metformin and stayed on it throughout. I also moved onto insulin whilst pregnant and came off that afterwards. I emailed my readings weekly to my diabetic team at the hospital. I also had a preconception meeting with the this team so they could explain everything.

I was considered high risk due to the diabetes so was put under consultant care which was reassuring and I had extra scans. They said normally they would induce at 38 weeks (this was 4 years ago now though) but I was induced earlier at 36 weeks as i developed preeclampsia towards the end (they advised I took baby aspirin which they believe helped keep it at bay as long as it did).

Good luck

Welcome @Rachel2022 🙂 My tips are to work to control your blood sugar as well as you can in preparation for pregnancy, and to concentrate on your general health and fitness too. There are various pre-conception diets around but do make sure they fit with your Type 2 needs.

What was your HbA1C when you were diagnosed?
