PIP appeal

Hi, wanted to pick your brains. My daughter is Type 1 Diabetic & was awarded middle rate DLA. She has now turned 16 & has applied for PIP. She has received a letter to inform us she is no longer entitled to any payments. She is constantly battling to control her blood sugar levels despite having a pump. I transport her or make arrangements for family members to transport or collect from school particularly when she has had a hypo & is wiped out. She relies on people around her for support in school & at home. Has anyone successfully appealed the PIP decision.

Hi mrsbasky, welcome to the forum. I wish my reply could be more positive because your situation sounds like a tough one, but the only successes I’ve heard about are those who have another condition. Type 1 diabetes alone doesn’t seem to be enough.

No chance of getting PIP. It doesn’t depend on the diagnosis, it depends on functional disablement. Like Bronco Billy, I don’t know of anyone with just a diagnosis of T1 getting PIP. I get PIP, standard rate for daily living, and full rate mobility, but that has nothing to with diabetes.

Same as Mike, mine has nothing to do with diabetes, my lungs don’t work.

On a different tack...
If your daughter is struggling with her levels, even though she is on a pump, it would be useful to contact the diabetes team and discuss this. With the pump it is useful to check basal rates with a fasting test (done in blocks of approx 6 hours over a number of days), and also reviewing her carb ratios and sensitivity.
This may then help her to develop more independence.
