Hi All, just joining. Near fatal DKA and pancreatitis in ICU early June with no previous history. Very fast recovery and now Lantus for time being - all well balanced. Already stopped Novorapid completely and just started Metformin. Enjoying new exercise regime, especially lane swimming.

Welcome to the forum Peter.

I am glad that things have settled down and that the exercise regime is working well.
Keep in touch and fire away with any questions that you have.

And welcome from me as well Peter. Sounds like you are getting your head round things which is great. Read around the forum and the learning zone, ask any questions and join in the conversations. Look forward to hearing more of your story.

Welcome to the forum Peter from a fellow T2.

Welcome to the forum @Peter Bateson

Does pancreatitis make you more of a type 3c? Or was the pancreatitis a temporary thing? I don’t know enough about it!

@eggyg @Hepato-pancreato and @mikeyB have had pancreatitis I think?

Great that you have started exercise. Swimming is very good for you!

That was thoughts too !

I *think* it depends on whether the pancreatitis is chronic or acute, and how much damage was done to the pancreas... but as I say I’m always a bit in the dark about it!

I had previously only mild borderline warnings about type 2 which I had managed to overcome through diet. Sudden admission to A&E and ICU with severe mixed HHS/DKA was a big surprise and shock. Glucose was 46, PH 7.05, ketones 6.8 and HbA1c 124. The diagnosis was "acute hyper-triglyceridemia- induced pancreatitis with concurrent DKA". I recovered very rapidly with a constant insulin infusion for several days and was in hospital for 8 days. Negative for Type 1. Blood sugar stabilised very quickly and has remained so for three months with easily controlled diet. Almost always between 6-10 mmol/L. Initial dose of 18 units Novorapid 3 x a day rapidly reduced and then discontinued altogether. Currently Lantus 20 units 2x daily plus introducing Metformin. No side effects and generally feel great. Insulin will probably be reduced still further when Covid risk has passed. MRI showed pancreas back to normal and no gallstones but some signs of mild NAFLD. Must say I've experienced really TOP CLASS treatment from the NHS throughout my hospital stay in Southmead, Bristol, and afterwards, with follow-up phone calls with consultants and easy and regular contact with diabetic nurses at the hospital and local health centre when required. I feel very lucky and am sorry to read that others seem not to have had the same level of support.

Type 1 is differnt to 3c , Type3c is caused by damage to the pancreas or removal of pancreas.

Glad you have had such excellent treatment @Peter Bateson

Your team seem to have things well in hand. And great that your pancreas is showing to be back to normal.
