I have been type2 for about 15 years, on gliclazide 80mg two a day, sugar levels 14 going to bed and 12 first thing on a morning, feel like if I don't get sugar down I am heading for a fall, none smoker, none drinker but one hell of a sweet tooth! I am 54 but when it comes to food more like 74..... I don't like salads I hate fruit... Need ideas to get on top of this, and to talk to guys who are going through the same things as me.
Hi Pete, we're about the same age (I just turned 55). It can be difficult changing your habits and tastes at our age, but it can be done and might not take as long as you might think. I would suggest that you start a food and drink diary, including the amount of carbohydrates in everything you eat and drink (you can find the amounts on packaging, or use a book like the
Collins Calorie Counter which lists most food items). Using your food diary you can assess your daily intake of carbs more accurately - remember that, although sugar is the most obvious carb other things like rice, potatoes, pastya, things made from flour are also carbs. I would also recommend reading
The GL Diet for Dummies which will give you a good, straightforward explanation of how you can eat things that will have least impact on your blood sugar levels.
There's nothing wrong with having the occasional sweet treat, but try to make them special, and as part of a main meal rather than as snacks. Try instead to snack on things like nuts or cheese - you would be surprised how quickly your craving for sugar reduces. Don't worry about your fruit intake and eating salads, the main thing to bear in mind is your carbohydrate intake. Use your diary to find out how much you are currently consuming and then look for areas where things might be improved - ask here if you are not sure and we will help.
It's good that you have recognised the problem and are seeking help. Once you get this sorted you will feel so much better and healthier with better levels
🙂 And don't forget the benefits of regular exercise - this can really help improve your insulin sensitivity and lower your levels, so do try and do something every day.
