A reader of this column recently asked: ?My 8-year-old dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. How is this going to effect the rest of her life? What can I do to help her be healthy? Can the diabetes go away??
Veterinarians seem to be seeing more cats and dogs with diabetes currently than we did in the past. When I started practicing 26 years ago in Northern California, I saw about five or six cases a year. I see about five times as many cases now.
I rarely saw a diabetic cat in my early days of practice. Diabetic cats comprise about 50 percent of the cases I see now.
