Relationship to Diabetes

Ive been using an Accuchek Aviva for 2 weeks now and was really pleased with how I'm getting nice low BG numbers. Last week we stayed in a hotel for 3 nights of really scary food, rich, heavy and quite carby. I ate as carefully as I could and was delighted not to record high BG numbers even once.
Tonight we were at a friends and she served rich curry with sultanas, rice, and next, sweetened fruit salad. I didn't feel I could refuse as she doesn't know I am diabetic and had made such an effort. Again Accuchek recorded 6.5 two hours after the meal. Same sort of figure as I get after a day on green salad! I am worried my machine or strips are faulty. I'm not taking any medicines, can I just be so lucky?
Anyone had a similar experience?

Have you done a solution test to check its ok?

Have you lost a lot of weight? If the answer is yes, your insulin resistance may have improved. My pancreas seems to cope with all but the worst carb binges these days.

Laura yes, I am one of those people who - when all else fails, read the instructions. I tried today to get a bottle of the meter test stuff, but it seems you have to ring Accuchek for it, so I will.
And yes LeeLee I have lost a bit of weight since D Day, hardly like to believe thats it, but it is a cheering hope.
Thank you both !

If you register your meter online with Accu Chek you can request batteries, test solution & diaries as & when needed

I didn't realise there was a solution check for meters...how does it work x

It has a specific amount of glucose in it I believe, so it should produce a result in a specific range of values. This shows whether the meter and strips are working correctly (or not), and that it's not a problem with how the blood is being tested (e.g. sticky fingers!) 🙂 You're supposed to check with control solution every so often, but I admit I probably haven't done mine for over 4 years 😱

Any rice based meals are probably better tested 4 hours after eating due to the absoption rate. At two hours the food might not have hit the blood sugrs.
Glad to hear you enjoyed your meal and congratulations on the weight loss.

There is 2 solutions
Control 1 which is hypo range
Control 2 which is hyper range.

You programme the test in to the machine using the arrows

Bth I haven't done one in 2 years but I've had a few odd readings so doing a test to make sure all is ok

Inaccurate meters

Its essential that if you get a reading which you think is strange, that you retest preferably with another meter before taking any action.

My son had a horrendous episode where he tested 20BG for which I gave a correction. A few minutes later I thought something didn't add up so I retested and it came up 8BG! I did several more tests and they were all different (one reading said 1.4BG!!).

Since then I learnt a lot of things like meters only have to be something like like within 80% to be considered accurate.

There are lots of other things which determine readings like how your strips are stored, how you test, i.e. do you squeeze your finger, do you let the strip touch your finger or suck up the blood.

What I always do now is if my son says he's having a hypo and the meter says he's not or vice versa or the meter shows a high reading I always get him to retest.

I agree with you there tony about re testing if it seems odd compared to how you feel.

I don't know if others will agree but I do listen to my body know what's going on

Hi Tony,
another tip is to always make sure hands are washed before a test. You never know what could be lurking on those fingers 😱

If your son says he feels hypo and the meter says not, this can happen if there is a rapid drop in blood sugar.
Different fingers give different readings even if taken within a few mins of each other.
Bottom line though as you say...... any suspect reading retest.
