Excuse me for being thick, but don’t they get them free anyway? Who has to pay for their checkups?

It’s a crown dependency so whilst it’s part of the British Isles it’s not part of the UK so they don’t have the NHS

So many people living here don’t know the difference between Great Britain, United Kingdom and British Isles, that it’s no wonder people from other countries get confused too!

I know the difference between GB and UK but have never quite worked out the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, they aren’t their own countries but they aren’t really part of ours either. Perhaps I should educate myself! Like you say, if a lot of the people living here don’t understand the difference (and I like to consider myself at least reasonably intelligent) then how can you expect anyone else to. I shall go and do some reading!

British Isles is the term to use if you want to include Channel Islands and Isle of Man, though this term does also include the Republic of Ireland, so it depends on the context. The term to look up if you want to understand Channel Islands and the Isle of Man is crown dependencies - basically they have their own systems, but the UK government has some responsibilities for them like defence.

OS have a picture that explains the main 3 terms better https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/ne...Britain is the official, you see all too often.
