JOHN McGarrity, whose shocking story we report today, has lived through the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and World War II.

Born in the old slums of Glasgow, he barely missed a day off work sick before he took his well-earned retirement.

To see such a proud man shivering on a trolley in a hospital corridor because here in Scotland in 2013 there are not enough beds to go round brings a tear to the eye.

In today?s health service, thanks to amazing strides in science, we can treat with relative ease diseases which when John was a boy were lethal killers.

But we can?t find a hospital bed for a man suffering from chest pains. And not only can we not find him a bed, we can?t even give him a pillow either. So much for dignity for all.
