Type 2
Only recently diagnosed type 2. Started Metformin 500g last Thursday. My most irritating symptom presently is peeing a lot. I don't mind getting up once or twice during the night but I find it really distressing if I'm on a longish drive or somewhere with no access to loos. Will Metformin relieve this symptom? If so does it take some time to take effect?

If I'm right in thinking it's the same as us Type 1's as your blood sugars lower you will pee a lot less, I know I do x

Hi, We tend to pee a lot when our BG is high, it's how our body tries to get rid of some glucose when it gets too high. You need to ensure you're drinking enough so you don't get dehydrated. Sorry I can't remember if you are testing , if so what are your levels like.
It does take a shortish while for metfartin :D to start working and atm you are only on a low dose, this is to try to lessen the side effects, so you won't be getting the full benefit if this med yet.

Its my understanding that as your blood glucose levels drop so does the urge to pee x it was definitely the case for me and what a relief not having to stake out the toilets in every location in case I got caught short x

Ditto what @Manda1 says. It's awful when your out and with family and your worse then the liluns saying can we find a toilet please. I've noticed swings in BS certainly dictate my weeing habits

If frequent or urgent need for bathroom continues you can buy a radar key online which means you can access the locked disabled toilets. Metformin can cause tummy troubles so can be a God send when there is a long queue for the loo!

When you develop diabetes you have high levels of glucose in your blood, so the body tries to remove it by peeing a lot. As the levels drop to normal, so the frequency of peeing also becomes less frequent and returns to normal rates
As mentioned, drink enough water

Do you have a blood glucose meter? if not, get one so you can monitor the levels. If you drive & use insulin you are required to measure blood glucose before a journey, but it would be useful & sensible to do that even if you are only on Metformin

For a while there will be glucose in your urine, which can lead to the fungal infection, thrush, so beware of soreness & itching around your genitals. most common in ladies, but men can get it too, under the foreskin

I think my level was about 16 at my test. I've ordered a meter as quite a few have recommended it.
