I paid a visit to my diabetic drop in centre yesterday. The DSN suggested buying a pedometer to give me an idea of when or which days I'm more active and to maybe pinpoint some of the odd hypos i get here and there.

The DSN said not to go getting one which does all sorts but just a basic one which apparently you can get for around ?5. Can anyone recommend one to me? Also does anyone know of one which can maybe be worn round the neck or be put into a pocket?

I'm a stay at home person so my main exercise/activities are general housework, shopping, laundry, mopping etc etc.

The DSN was telling me she once had a lady who used to go hypo whenever she did ironing. It was either the movements done when ironing or could even have been the steam coming from the iron.

I read pedometer as something else entirely and I will admit that it made me chuckle

I got mine from Lloyds for about a fiver. But I reckon you could get from from just about ay chemist, sports shop or perhaps Argos... Yup, Argos has one for 2.99, Boots = 12.99, Lloyds = 6.99. Hmm, apparently there's an app on Google Play if you have a smartphone.

I used to use a pedometer to measure my running, but have now got a GPS watch that is much more accurate and can record other information. The problem with some pedometers is that they might not be very accurate, so it's a good idea to read the reviews on something like amazon - this one looks like a good one. Ideally, they need to be worn on the hip so that the motion sensor can count the steps. If measuring distance then you need to work out your average stride length. 🙂

Most basic pedometers have to be clipped to a waist pocket or a belt, so that they can detect when you lift that leg. It also registers when you leg raises as you pedal a bike, but obviously each "leg raise" by bike gets you futher than a pace with one leg.

Basic pedometers just count steps, but that's fine, especially if eg you're aiming for 5,000 or 10,000 steps per day, and may be more accurate than those that try to convert to distances walked, calories spent etc, as pace length is different depending on whether you're walking uphill / on level / downhill; plus walking / running have different pace lengths.

Sometimes , clinics etc give away free pedometers, and I've seen free or very cheap offers of cereal packets etc.

Thanks for all your replies.

I was wondering about this one

http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/omron-hj-005e-vital-steps-step-counter_1_2006.html#2006

It's also on eBay with the cheapest one being ?7.49 with free postage. I also read somewhere that it can be clipped to belt, trousers, skirt or jersey pants and the last three being what I would be wearing around the house.

Before I decide to buy what does anyone think about it please.

I've bought from ChemistDirect before.

Looks good, and a good price so you wouldn't be losing much if it didn't quite match up to expectations 🙂 Omron are a good make so quality should be decent.
