Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering, is/are there patterns to peoples insulin intake? I'm not so much asking about "specific" insulin amounts, but more the patterns across the day.

Personally, I have always had the same pattern from day 1:

More insulin in the morning, a bit less at lunch and and less again in the evening. Typically 2 units per 10g of carbs a.m 1.5units per 10g at lunch and 1unit per 10g at evening meal.

To make my question a bit clearer, do you always need more in the morning and less in the evening? Or do some people have the opposite, less in the morning and more at night? or do some people have no patterns?

Thanks

I have always needed more in the morning.
I use a 1:10g carb ratio throughout the day but add an extra 1.5-2units in the morning to cover DP/FOTF. If I don't have breakfast, I obviously still inject that 1.5-2 units so I don't consider it a different carb ratio, it's just an add on extra.

Thanks Rebrascora,

Me too. I need that extra unit whether I eat breakfast or not. My morning ratio is always more + the DP addition.

Because I eat low carb it is a bit difficult to assess carb ratio as protein is also a factor so I just stick to 1:10 because it is close enough with keeping carbs low to not make a significant difference... Law of small numbers and all that, so I couldn't really tell you if I am more insulin resistant as such in the morning.
I do know that my basal needs tail off about 3pm so I am more likely to hypo afternoon or early evening and I need pretty much no basal between 3am and 5am unless I have eaten a lot of protein and fat in a late evening meal.

My daughter has been type 1 for nearly 9 years now and for most of that time has needed more bolus insulin in the morning and less in the evening, at the moment though it all seems to be the same! Basal increases massively about 9pm for a few hours to stop her going ridiculously high overnight, and her school/non-school days have swapped round since lockdown - she used to need quite a lot more basal insulin at weekends because of being less active, now for some reason she seems to need more on school days to stop her going high mid morning!

I use 1-10 in the morning 1-15 midday and 1-12 for evening for the cooler months of the year and even less insulin per carbs in the summer months due to more activity and the warmer temperatures . Type 1 with pump.

Mine is 1:11 in the morning, 1:7 lunchtime and 1:10 in the evening. I'm considering going back to 1:10 in the morning though

Mine used to be quite steady, a bit more in the morning, a bit less later on (rising and falling during the year, but keeping the same ‘slope’). My basal pattern tended to keep more or less the same shape too, rising and falling gently through the year

But more recently, over the last couple of years both basal pattern and bolus ratios have become much more elastic and wibbly-wobbling all over the place. No idea why!

Mine is just 1unit to 10g carbs right through the day - all I seem to do now is keep an eye on hypos or highs and reduce or increase Tresiba accordingly every few days/weeks

My ratios vary but basically follow a similar pattern - I need more insulin in the morning, and less as the day goes on.
