Hi all,

It's my birthday on friday, and in line with usual I'm having a weekend long party 🙂 This will be my first one with the big D and while I shall indulge in a few treats over the course of the weekend it would be great to have lots of "party food" avaliable which is D friendly.

Wondered if anyone had any thing they had made or ideas! I tooka quick look through the recipes but thought if there was something in there that someone posted they could let me know the name and make it easier for me :D I'm going shopping tomorrow afternoon so hopefully will get some ideas by then!

In the meantime am going to trawl through my new D cook books and see if I can find anything inspiring!

(just a little note - nothing with pepper or chili in - am allergic much as I wish I wasn't!):D

I guess it depends on what you like and how naughty you want to be!

Being diabetic means that it is the carbohydrates that tend to matter - so that would suggest going for treats that are predominately (unsaturated) fat / protein / slow carbs.

Nuts, cheese (ok, that's sat fat), vegetables...

Watch out for some of the D diet books - they sometimes subscribe to the mantra that any fat is bad for you and load up with carbs!

On the other hand, it's your birthday weekend 😛

Personally I forget the treats and go find a nice big steak instead :D

Asparagus wrapped in parma ham is nice. I cook the asparagus tips in the microwave for one minute. Then wrap a slice of parma ham round each asparagus tip and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes at about 200 degrees

For starters, try crustless quiche. Let me know if you have trouble finding it and I'll re-post.

PS Happy Birthday:D

Mark - my main birthday treat will be going to the local steak house for a massive steak and maybe even some chips! I shall also be having one slice of birthday cake :D

I don't want to be too naughty all weekend especially when have a further 4 stone to lose (1 down!)

I've used the cookbooks quite a few times for meals and they are pretty good. Tasty at least! Unlike before when I was just eating grilled chicken and salad as was terrified to eat anything else before I looked into things 🙂

I've already got sugar free jelly with fruit in it (to make up for the cake), some homemade coleslaw, bowl salad, etc on my but it's all pretty boring :D Also will be at least 10 of us so I'd like to have most of it prepped and sorted out so I don't have to do too much cooking with people round :D

I love asparagus, but I think it will be too much hassle ... unless I pre prep it all and just have to cook it - but once it goes cold wont it be horrible?

LeeLee am off to look - of only because I am intrigued at the idea!

Slimming World have masses of party food recipes (and all other kinds) online, almost all D-friendly. Unfortunately they're only available to members and you probably don't have time to join a group before the weekend. It is possible to join online, the cost is the same (a fiver a week) but you don't get the group support when you go solo.

If I'm honest I wouldn't want to join it anyway 🙂 I don't believe in "diets" or slimming groups or associated things really. More power to people it works for (and I know you have had huge success from reading around on the boards), but I find it demotivational for myself 🙂 Just a head thing, nothing to do with the groups or organisations themselves ... except for maybe Rosemary Conley - she used to really annoy me 😛

Hi Shambles
Not sure what your tastebuds are like ??? but here's a couple of savoury and sweet options which I tend to go for when I have people over

Dips: (you can get carrs water biscuits or pita bread to go with the dips)
- black olive tapenade (black olives, olive oil, basil, garlic, anchovies, capers) I could live off this stuff!
- guacamole (avocados, coriander, lime, tomatoes, olive oil)
- home made tzatziki - the home made version tastes MUCH better than the vile stuff you buy in shops - natural yogurt, salt, garlic, cucumber, dried mint
The nice thing about dips is that you can prep them beforehand and leave them in the fridge.
- I also love spring rolls with some soy sauce - great party food - perhaps the veggie options have less fat?

Sweet stuff
- I'm actually not that much into sweet stuff, BUT I do like a good chocolate mousse. The individual ones you get in Sainsburys have 1.5 CP per portion so really not that devilish at all
- its also super easy to make it home made (a bar of chocolate and a 4 eggs)
- Ben and Jerry's Phish Food is nice as well (although a bit pricey..) and their frozen yogurt version tastes just as good but isnt quite as sinful 🙂

Good luck and hope you have a nice evening / birthday weekend !

Thanks for the ideas Cleo - I picked up some pitta bread and got the stuff to make the black olive stuff as that sounds amazing! I love olives :D

Also found angel delight butterscotch (supermarket own version) that was no added sugar so am DELIGHTED :D also going a bit retro and a bit tapasy - so got lots of bits that tie in with that - looks like it should be a good spread and lots that is perfectly good for me to eat which will make up for the glass of prosecco and pizza I just had while out 😉

Excellent - good to hear that you like olives ! the tapanade is really yummy (the Spanish do know good food!). Apparently you can also do it with green olives but Ive never tried that although am sure its yummy as well.

Hope you have a lovely birthday !😱
PS am presuming you found a recipe online ? otherwise let me know and I'll send you mine 🙂

happy birthday, have a great time.

Food, are you doing a proper sit down meal or a buffett? things like nuts always go down well. I always serve cheese and pineable on sticks, plent of things like carrott batons, celery and dips seem to go down well too. You do need some carbs, but I try to save mine so I can splurge on cake...

Hi Cleo - I found one in a diabetic cookbook I have so bonus and it was amazing!

Did lots of veg and homemade dips - worked out really well :D

Oooh Happy Birthday for Fri, hope it's a yummy one! it's my birthday on Thursday but instead of treating myself with food I am treating myself with a Counting Crows gig 😉 xx

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but there's probably no benefit in the sugar free version.

Looking at the nutritional info for 'real' Angel Delight, the regular version has 15.9g of carbs per 87g portion, while the sugar-free version has 10.8g per 87g portion. Granted, it is less but I would suggest that the sugar-free one won't be dramatically better for your blood sugar. It's also not actually sugar-free - although the sugar-free version contains no sucrose, it is sweetened by maltodextrin, which is still technically a sugar and is absorbed as rapidly as glucose.

But it is a 30% carb reduction Deus - which has to be something. Made with full-cream milk to slow those carbs down it'd be worth a couple of test strips just to see I'd have thought. I do love butterscotch angel delight me 🙂

True, but it is also an actual reduction of 5g which for many people won't be particularly substantial.

I agree testing would be worthwhile and I'm not saying it's completely useless - but it is a reminder that 'sugar-free' frequently does not mean what most people would assume it to mean.

What it does mean is I can kid myself that it's all good and indulge as a birthday treat 😛

Not going to be having it every week 😉
