Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world, that are open to everyone to take part in.
On behalf of the Parkrun Diabetes Champions group a survey has been set up about Parkrun and any possible barriers for people with diabetes to taking part. The survey is aimed at people with diabetes, and parents or carers.
Mike Mansfield, Champion for Diabetes Volunteer for Parkrun, said: “Last weekend there were more than 430 Parkrun events in the UK, with more than 100,000 people of all ages and abilities taking part. I’m sure you understand the health benefits of regular exercise for those who live with all types of diabetes.
“What you might not be aware of is that Parkrun wants its events to be as accessible as possible to people with long term conditions and disabilities. Last year Parkrun UK was awarded government funding to embark on a three-year project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of such groups by increasing physical activity and social engagement.
“The ‘Parkrun Champions Programme’ has been established to build a group of specialist Parkrun volunteers aligned to particular disabilities or long-term conditions. The Parkrun Champions are drawn from the community associated with each disability or long-term condition, and a team of Parkrunners living with diabetes has come together to provide other people living with diabetes with a pathway and encouragement towards Parkrun.
“As a first step we are consulting with those living with diabetes to find out what we can do to make Parkrun more welcoming and accessible. We would really appreciate you taking a few minutes to help us understand what we can do to increase the number of people with diabetes who take part.”
