The quick–thinking actions of concerned parents saved their little boy when he displayed symptoms of a life–threatening condition.

George Askew was a happy healthy four–year–old boy, living in Matlock with mum, Anne, and dad, Dorrion.

But his parents became concerned in January when he started being thirsty all the time.

“He started drinking excessively and wanting to wee all the time,” Anne explained. “He just seemed irritable and tired and he lost weight.”

Aware of some of the symptoms of diabetes, Anne took George to see his GP.

After carrying out some tests, the doctor found the youngster’s blood sugar levels were sky–high and told Anne to take him to hospital immediately.

All credit to parents for getting George to GP, but also credit to GP, staff at GP surgery, all staff at hospital for getting diagnosis and appropriate treatment in a timely fashion. If a receptionist had been obstructive or there hadn't been transport to hospital (not clear if parents drove him there or if ambulance was needed) etc, the story might have been very different.

Maybe he will achieve his wish of "not being diabetic" by the end of his life, as he's probably got at least another 70 years, and research is progressing, just not at the oft-quoted rate of a cure within 10 years.
