Hi everyone

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 in March 2005, so will shortly have her five year Diabetes 'birthday'.

I've just found this site while searching online for a new novelty to help her with her diabetes. I just discovered at the weekend that she's failing to test her blood at lunchtimes at school and although she is injecting insulin (she uses NovaRapid) the amounts are clearly a pure guess and not a very accurate one as her HbA1C tests indicate.

This site looks great and very active. I've previously read and posted a few times on Diabetes Daily (www.diabetesdaily.com) which is also great and I've had some really good advice from members there but what I was really hoping to find was a site for my daughter to start to talk to other teenagers. The Diabetes Daily teen board is not so active and members are mostly American so I think would be less relevant for her in comparisons over school stuff etc.

She's in touch with a few friends she met last year on a Diabetes UK activity holiday but something like this would be good too. Communicating regularly with people with diabetes may help keep it more at the front of her mind. She's aware of the risks of not taking better care, but inevitably life takes over sometimes, and she doesn't give it the attention it unfortunately needs.

Can anyone recommend any sites? Or could one be started here?

Any advice appreciated - I'll post this on the parents board also in case not everyone reads this one.

Best regards

Sue

hi Sue and welcome to you and your Daughter
there has been talk of a teen forum on here before im not sure what happened as i think it gets complicated re child protection etc Im not sure is there any face book teen Diabetic groups i wonder ?
im sure someone more knowledgeable about this will come in and give you more info soon x

Hi Sue and welcome!

I hope you, and your daughter should she like it here, enjoy the forum.

I am not sure about the situation with teens- it may be mest to PM a moderator or admin?

Anyway, you are right- this forum certainly is active! It keeps us all busy anyway, I hope you find some useful stuff!

Take care

Louisa

Hi Sue, welcome to the forum.

Hi Sue,
I also have a 14yrs old with Type 1, diagnosed 2 years ago. Much like your daughter, she is 'forgetting' to test recently and guessing how much insulin to take. She is an member of diabetes daily , as I am , but spends her time on facebook, and lost interest in diabetes websites. Mostly I think as there were so few kids her own age on there. Its a tricky one, keeping them interested, as their age by necessity means they have other much more interesting things to do! I think your idea of a teenage section here is a good one, if they only dipped in and out occasionally it might create a spark of interest!!
Best of luck and do keep us updated.

hi sue

not sure if it's quite what you had in mind, but i'm 21 (although i'm about...12 at heart) and would be more than happy to talk to your daughter if she'd like. i was diagnosed aged 2, so i've been through the teens with diabetes.

i might be volunteering at one of the DUK holidays this year - send your daughter on another!! :D

Hi Sue,

I was diagnosed when I was five. I'm now nineteen so if your daughter wants to chat she can add me on Facebook or MSN, please PM me if she does.

Hi everyone

Thanks everyone for your responses and suggestions and also offers to talk Tom and Shiv, I really appreciate that and will bear it in mind if my nagging (that I'd like to call persuasion) doesn't work!

We haven't applied for a Diabetes UK holiday this year as the dates didn't really work out and I know it's quite difficult to get on two years in a row. We'll definitely apply next year and she is also very keen to volunteer as a helper in a few years too.

I have just sent a message via the 'contact' option on the site so perhaps I will hear something back - it looks like there's a few people who might be interested if one was set up. I understand the additional protection issues it may throw up though.

best regards

Sue
